I just noticed that sometime today the rocket thing (forgotten what it's called) on the dock has disappeared so now I can't access things like the dvd player, etc.
How do I find it and get it back on the dock?

It's located in you application folder. Simply drag it to your dock.

Additionally, you can go to system preferences -mission control - set a hot corner to open launch pad.
