Does anybody know how to import AVCHD files direct into an ipad 3 using the camera connection kit without having to download and convert in a Mac first? Motion Jpeg and jpegs are fine but I much prefer the quality of AVCHD, any suggestions very welcome!

AVCHD is not a supported video format, so you can't.

You should convert to MPEG4 (H.264) - the quality is excellent and is natively supported in hardware.
You will need to at least "remux" them as long as these files are not interlaced. In most cases (except, again, for interlaced footage), full, time-consuming and quality-degrading reencoding isn't necessary.
