The printer needs to be connected to your home computer network. It can be connected to a wifi modem or to the computer. If it is an airprint supported printer, you should find it when you select a print option in an application. If it is not an airprint supported printer, it may have a software update to allow it to be seen as an airprint printer. If not, then you will need a 3rd party program. I use FingerPrint from collobos.com. I am able to print to my Canon and HP non-airprint printers from both my iPad and my iPhone.
You can also look on your printer manufacturer's site. Many of them have come up with either apps or with ways to pseudo airprint. I have the app "Print n Share" on my iPad and Touch and it works iwth my kodak printer

Cheers, Tom 😉
Fingerprint is good and eurosmartz Print is also a decent one to try, goodluck!
Ditto on Fingerprint. It is awesome. No hassle setup, instanty worked. I went straight to Safari and my printer was there.
I've just purchased Fingerprint from Collobos at £16.43. You install it on your desktop and the Ipad uses the wifi link to your desktop and prints on whichever printer you select. I am not a computer expert but really did find this to be the simple solution
You might try turning off IPV6 on the printer. Then you wouldn't have to use an applicaiton. That's what we ended up doing for my mother-in-law, whcih keeps things simple for her iPad.
