Why does iTunes automatically rate my songs at random?

Hi would appreciate if anyone could help me with this problem. Upon plugging my iPod Nano into my Macbook Pro, random songs become rated 4/5 stars, messing up my 'Top Rated' playlist. No, I've never rated these songs before or touched their album artwork etc. so I don't understand how these songs can be rated automatically despite playing some of the songs only once. Thanks in advance for your reply.

(iTunes Version: 10.6.3)

Could this from iTunes Help be a possible explaination: "When you rate an album, all of its songs are given the same rating. You can change a rating by clicking or dragging to add or remove stars. If you rate tracks but not the album, iTunes displays the rated songs’ average as the album rating. Stars that iTunes assigns are hollow; stars that you assign are solid."
