How do I change the view in mail?

I just upgraded to Lion and not sure how to change the view in mail. I've read that the default setting is to have the view window to the right of the email list, but all that I have is a list or the classic view. How do I get back to the default setting?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Two things to look at:

Is there a little dot in the center of the border on the right hand side of the mail list window? That indicates the viewing pane is hiding there. Either drag the right hand border to the left, or double click on it.

If you are literallly in classic mode and want to go back to the new mode, this is done in Mail > Preferences > Viewing.
