Q: I have 11 software updates. The machine says in need to retart to install. I am in an infinite loop where it just keeps restarting and never installing the updates. Help!

If 10.7.0 or later...

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk.
