Are you using an action you've downloaded specifically for Photoshop? The Preview Automator action (which is installed by default) won't convert from PSD. The action is designed to ignore unrecognized file formats, so it wouldn't have thrown an error to tell you this. Oddly enough, Automator is fully capable of converting PSD and a variety of other formats that the action's author must have been unaware of. Check out this recent thread on the subject:
You'd just have to swap out TGA for PSD.
Are you sure the default workflow doesn't have a conversion option for preview? Because under mine (and all I have IS default) under the preview section I have the workflow: "Change type of images" and I have it gather a .psd group and I want to convert it to JPEG. And I figure that since preview can view .psd it should be able to read a .psd and convert it to a JPEG, I also figure this because I can open up each .psd and save it as a JPEG and since I can do that the point of automator is to make workflows so I do not have to do the same thing over and over SO i figured it would be possible...
This is discussed in the thread I linked to. The major points are :
- Although Preview is the listed application, the actions actually have nothing to do with Preview itself.
- Automator's description of the Change Type of Images Action excludes several image types that Preview is capable of converting, such as PSD and TGA.
- This is a bug that Apple has not fixed.
- To get beyond the limitation, you can use a bit of code I wrote in place of the Action.
If Apple doesn't fix this soon I may roll the code into a regular action complete with interface.
