early 2009imac to Sony Bravia KDL-52XBR9, Cant get video and sound at the same time

I use a mini display port to HDMI to get the video and i use audio Y cable splitter for the audio.

Here is the problem, i can get video but not sound. If i disconnect the HDMI cable from the T.V. then i can get sound. If the HDMI cable and the audio cables are connected at the same time i can get video but no sound. I called Sony and according to them there is no setting on the T.V. that would help.

My theory is that it's some kind of setting in the imac that prevents it from sending audio and video to the tv at the same time. Unfortunately i have not been able to figure it out.

Any help would be appreciated. I checked the cables so they are not the problem.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You need a cable like

http://www.amazon.com/C2G-27016-Velocity-Toslink---Optical/dp/B0002JFN1A/ref=sr_ 1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1340544354&sr=1-2&keywords=mini+jack+to+toslink

and connect the mini jack end to the headphone jack on your iMac and the Toslink end to the Digital input on the TV. Your TV seems to be older if the diagram is correct and may simply not be supported.

the sound output is headphones, cant change it to anything else.

Do you get audio if you plug in a pair of earphones or some amplified speakers? This would indicate the problem is with the connection or the TV if audio was actually coming out of the stereo jack.

As for the optical, I copied that from the 52XBR9 user manual and I don't see optical in in those ports, only out.

i plugged in my headphones and it worked while the HDMI cable has connected. Tried with the tv on and tv off always got sound.

i did both smc and pram resets and no luck with getting sound.

I even tried turning the tv on first, then the mac and still cant get sound and video on at the same time.

I did get the start up sound come from my mac speakers when i turned it on while everything was connected. Should that even be happening?

So with the HDMI connected you do get sound with from the stereo jack but just not when connected to the TV.

Earlier I ask if you checked the sound output level in the system preferences. Is it full up? Perhaps check it with Audio MIDI Setup (in Utilities).

I don't have any more ideas at this point. I do not think this is a computer problem at this point (you do have audio when not connected to the TV). Rather its a problem with your TV or those cables (even if they do work separatly).
