/Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager

In your system Library a framework is missing; did you recently install Final Cut? This usually causes this problem.

To restore the framework you can either reinstall your Operating System, or restore the framework from a recent backup, from the time before the problem occured.

Leonie: I was planning on downloading both Aperture and FCP-X on my new MBP-Retina. After reading this thread, I am concerned. Is there any advise you can share that would make both of these downloads co-exist without issue? Is the there an order in which to download or am I about to walk into a issue. I do not want to hi-jack this thread, but perhaps this advise would help those unfortunite ones that will need to re-install.

The order of installation (FCP-X, Aperture) does not matter. Both installations also can live side-by-side.

Only installing FCP-X may delete a necessary framework and you may have to reinstall your Mac-OS afterwards. I have not installed FCP-X for some time, and do not know, if the newest version still causes this problem.

I'd recommend to make a backup copy of the folder in the system library, before you install, so you can restore it easily, if you should see the same bug after installing FCP-X:

Do the following:

  • Go to the Finder's main menu bar and select "Go" > "Go to Folder"
  • Enter: /Library/Frameworks/
  • Press return

In the window that opens select the folder "PluginManager.framework" and create a copy.

Save the copy as a backup, so you can restore the famework, without need to reinstall MacOS.

If you have a TImeMachine Backup, you can restore from TimeMachine: Open the /Library/Frameworks folder as described above in the Finder, before you enter TimeMachine.

Replacing the /Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager binary with one from working system does the trick. This was caused by Final Cut Pro upgrade which replaced the PluginManager binary with one which supported only ppc and 32-bit i386 architecture therefore Aperture which is 64-bit x86 binary could not be started. Replacing the binary with one which supports all 3 architectures fixes the problem.

before (Aperture is broken):

$ file /Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager

/Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures

/Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager (for architecture ppc): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library ppc

/Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager (for architecture i386): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library i386

after the fix:

$ file /Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager

/Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager: Mach-O universal binary with 3 architectures

/Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager (for architecture ppc7400): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library ppc

/Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager (for architecture i386): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library i386

/Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager (for architecture x86_64): Mach-O 64-bit dynamically linked shared library x86_64

Apple notes the issue http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3528 however does not offer any automatic update which is weird since reinstalling is not the option sometimes, more so that the redelivery is trivial.
