Q: why does merging require so much space? trying to merge a 314gb iphoto library with a 360gb aperture library and aperture says it needs 2.1tb of space to complete the merge? why?

Don't know, but I suspect a good bit of it is that Aperture keeps untouched copies of the Libraries until the merge is completed (which would explain about 1.4 TB), and it also needs a large -- apparently very large -- scratch area.

You might try the following.  Just guesses -- no guaranties  :

    - Rebuild the Libraries (may better compress them)

    - Move them to new HD's (may defrag and possibly pack them better)

    - Export smaller chunks of the second Library and merge each chunk.

Or borrow a 3 TB drive.

I know that's not much help.  Perhaps someone else can contribute more.
