Can iPads print wirelessly to printers hooked up to wireless routers?

There are a number of 3rd party apps via the iTunes app store that provide for this including an HP app. The HP app may be limited to photos only, but not sure.

I have an iPad 2 and a hp deskjet f4440 printer. I know that my printer is not wireless capable but I've heard that a wireless router with a USB port can be used to print. Will this work with my iPad?
