Kernel Panic issues. Looking for Opinions.

Hello all.

First thank you very much for taking the time to read this and for any suggestions you may have!!

I've been having panics now for at least a month. They just started one day with a vengence. A little back ground on this system. ( posted machine specs at the bottom ) I've had 16gb of ram in my machine for about 3 years now. Its 3rd party I believe. The reason I mention the ram is I think thats what may be causing the kernel panics. Been all over many forums and ram comes up a lot as the cause. Thats the reason I'm posting here, to get your opinions. I'm hoping not! As I said, the rams been in the machine 3 years and the panics just started happening - I know that probably doesn't matter, ram can go bad BUT,....

I did replace the hard drive, at first I hoped that was the issue. It wasn't, apparently. Then after looking at previous panic logs it seemed that maybe it was a software thing. I have a fair amount of open source beta programs on my machine, and I went thru and deleted ones that showed up in the log and then just went thru and blew out ANY application either old or not really used. Needless to say that didnt stop the panics. REALLY hoping its not a logic board issue. Is there a way to tell based on the pasted log file below? Or the graphics card?

I really love this machine. Gotta ton of stuff on it, its been good to me otherwise. I have a few newer mac's so I won't be dead in the water but like I said, this has been a great machine for me. I'm sure someone out there can relate!

Panic info's posted below, if anyone has any ideas or suggestions for me to get to the bottom of this and hopefully fix it I would greatly appreciate it! IF it is a ram thing, obviously I'd need to replace that so any suggestions there would be great too. If it ends up being a logic board, guess I would be better off finding a similar machine to dump my ram/HD into.

Anyway, thank you again for reading this post and thanks in advance if you have any ideas on how to fix this problem ( if it is fixable! )

Hello, what SMB/MS-DOS/FAT32/NTFS devices or mounts do you have going?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

Reboot, test again.

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Your initial prime suspects are the third party kexts you have installed:

foo.tun 1.0

foo.tap 1.0

com.rogueamoeba.hermes 2.0.2

com.pleasantsoftware.driver.pleasantConnectDriver 1.1.0d1

com.hzsystems.driver.CDSDAudioCaptureSupport 1.5

com.AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport 3.2

You could boot in safe mode to suppress all the third pary addtions and see if your machine stablizes although some things may not run in that mode since all those drivers and other stuff is suppressed when in safe mode.

Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports

http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060309075929717

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?

To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.

Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.

May be a solution on one of these links.

WOW - great info!

Thank you all. Gives me plenty to get started to get to the bottom of this.

I will and report back in the hope that it helps me and maybe others. It may be a week or so, I'm in the hospital at the moment and yet to convince my wife to bring my machine here! lol - I'll be in a few days...Crohn's Disease. I will spare you all the details and leave it just at,...IT S*U*C*K*S!

I really do appreciate you all taking the time to reply and offer such helpful suggestions. Wish I could buy you all a beer, or beverage of choice!

Thanks again. I'll be back in a few and let y'all know how things work out.

Well I am out of the hosp, and first thing I did was run iDefrag.

I had it, I used it a long time ago on a different hard drive I had installed. I wasn't really expecting any results per say but it apparently did something.

I am not having panics,....at least not yet. I haven't been home long enough to see if any issues creep up. But I'm not having issues like I was before. The machine would work for about 30mins to 2 hours and then panic. So far things have been running for at least 6 hours without issue.

I'm not sure I fully understand why iDefrag worked, this hard drive isn't really that old. I haven't been doing as much video as I did before on this machine either. I've been mostly using my new macs. There are some tools on the mac with the panic issues that I use, but it isn't the workhorse it used to be, point being I haven't used the mac as hardcore as I have before, just seems it got fragmented pretty quickly - could be quality of the hard drive?

I still plan to go thru alot of the suggestions made, I could very well still be having issues - they just haven't crept up yet. As for the 3rd party stuff that appears, I do know that every time I did have a panic it listed a different set of 3rd party kexts each time. So I'm still watching that and need to look into that further.

So thanks again for your help and assistance and incredibly helpful suggestions and links - GREATLY APPRECIATED. I will check back if the panic returns but for now it seems that iDefrag did,...."something", and something good.

Still, I'd like to hear any opinions you guys may have on this, on iDefrag seemingly fixing the issue.

Thank you again!
