What options are there to make text easier to read from afar on an HD TV in Lion/M-Lion?

I'm thinking of setting up a media center for my parents but sometimes it makes things like browsing the web or looking at popups and menu items difficult to see from afar, e.g. on their 42" HD TV screen.

I'll be using:

Mac Mini
Trackpad
Lion or possibly Mountain Lion
