Jun 26, 2012 5:01 AM in response to Texas Mac Manby Gary - former developer,Of COURSE it's an X file. But in this case its cotents are version independent. Thus my interest in opening the file.
And "can't" is sort of like laying down the gauntlet. Now I'm GOING to open this file ...

Jun 26, 2012 8:32 AM in response to Gary - former developerby Jeff,This Wikipedia article indicates that systems running OS 9 can use the unreleased, developer versions of Disk Copy 6.4 or 6.5b13 to read .DMG files that are not compressed. Obviously, any problems incurred from downloading and using beta software are the risk that you take in doing so.

Thanks for the links. The Toast idea showed promise. But alas, it didn't pan out. I also tried the Disk Copy apptoach. But again I failed to open the file (it's compressed).
So what I'm going to try is a program called 7-ZIP. It doesn't have a Mac OS Classic (anything) version. But it DOES have source code available. And it claims to open DMG files (along with a plethora of other file types).
So I've downloaded the source code. I'll try to put it together in an OS 9 wrapper sometime soon.

Apr 21, 2015 4:20 PM in response to Gary - former developerby super777,if its compressed u will need to open it on a mac os x system..
and then u can use a program called dropDMG to make an uncompressed DMG file that is compatibler with mac os 9.
disk copy 6.4 and above works to mount..
but only on mac os 9.0 and above..
i tried disk copy 6.4 on a mac os 8.6 system and it would not mount.
