iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. could not establish a secure connection to the device.

Why can't iTunes establish a connection when it is plugged in? How can I transfer pictures and music if it refuses to connect.

I have restarted, checked date and time formats, updated all software, etc.

The MacBook connects fine with my iPad through iTunes.

What next?

iPhone 4.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4), 8 GB

If itunes on your computer doesn't recognize the phone, how do you back it up?

And then how do you restore it?

I see these instructions for backup......... Google returns various things to buy, adjust, tweak, etc.

How to start an iPhone backup:

  • Plug your iPhone into your computer
  • Launch iTunes
  • Select your iPhone in the ‘DEVICES’ list
  • Right-Click on your iPhone
  • Select “Back Up”
  • Wait for iPhone backup to complete

This will create a backup of your iPhone that you will be able to restore from later, and the procedure is the same in Mac OS or Windows. It is a good idea to create a current backup before you download and install the latest iOS version.

You don't need iTunes to back your phone up. You can use iCloud. You can set this up in your phone settings under iCloud. It will back up your pictures (photo stream) and the rest of your data in the cloud. After you reset and erase your phone you will be asked to enter your apple ID and it will also ask if you want to restore from a backup on iCloud. I am assuming the rest of your media is already on your computer. I am no expert on this stuff. It just worked for me.

I think i know the solution for this problem🙂. I had the same problem on my 3gs iphone. I believe the main reason for this error message is due to the fact that you have a jailbroken iphone. If so, the solution is to remove the cydia from your iphone by going to Packages --> cydia installer -- > modify and force remove (unsafe). After removing the cydia restart the iphone, most probably it will be stuck in Apple logo while booting. Now try to put the iphone in DFU mode and restore it in iTunes. iPHONE will restore with no issues.

Disclaimer 🙂 All the steps mentioned above worked for me, if its not working you, please dont ask me.

NOTE: WHEN YOU DO THE ABOVE STEPS, YOU WILL LOSE ALL THE DATA in the iPHONE, SO make sure you have backup. if you dont have backup dont try this option if your data is very important.

I solved the problem by resetting to factory settings. Since the phone was new to me, it didn't matter much that I didn't have a back-up per say. The contacts that were synched by icloud were automatically put back. I hadn't put pictures or music on it because it hadn't connected. Now I have everything on it, connects to everything, etc.

Once it was reset, it connects fine.

I had the same problem. I am trying to upgrade my iPad2 to 6.1.2

1. Connecting to my mac gave me the error message

2. Trying to update from within the devide itself gave another error message.

This is how I solved it:

1. Use iCloud to backup your content.

2. Put the device in DFU:

Entering DFU Mode (Official Instructions)

  1. Plug your device into your computer.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Hold the Power button for 3 seconds
  4. Hold the Home button without releasing the Power button for 10 seconds
  5. Release the Power Button but keep holding the Home button
  6. Keep holding the Home button until you are alerted by iTunes saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode

Make sure the device screen is blank and no logos are present

3. itune will finally recognize the devide. Click restore and then update.

Hope this helps.

iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. could not establish a secure connection to the device.
