How do you make text track an object?

Hi, I've been trying to find an answer to this question throught the afternoon, but I don't know what it's term is called or how I can do it myself.

I'm after being able to get text to lock onto an object so when it moves in the video, the text moves with it.

The best example I found was on this video

If you jump into the video about half way you get an example of what I'm trying to achieve. I really like the look of what this person has done - if someone can tell me how I can do this myself, it would be much appreciated. Is this something that iMovie '11 is capable of?

Cheers

you answered your question with your question:

it's called motion tracking

you tell an application to 'keep an eye on' some area in the frame and to create a motion path; finally, you can apply a 2nd layer (video, graphics, a title) to that path.

Motion5 (40€) offers a motion tracker. … steem learning curve!

in the AppStore, you'll find another funny tool called Elasty, which allows 'sticking elements' in video too ... but it costs like Motion, which is by far the more versatile tool.

and there a pro-tools like Mocha, which … are just expensive (1.500$) ....

watching your example let me assume, in this demo it is not motion-tracking, but simple key-framing.

this means, every 2, 5, 10 frames you manually adjust the position of the overlay (this is how the first StarWars light-sabres were done)

unfortunately, iM doesn't offer a key-frameable 2nd track/title/PiP.

in FCPX you could accomplish such an effect with key-frames with a snap! ... 😉
