How to pair a Nokia phone with an iPad 3?

Hi,

I would like to tether a Nokia 5800 phone with my New iPad via bluetooth. The iPad detects the phone correctly but when trying to pair the devices, the iPad displays a "pairing unsuccessful" error message. I guess I have to configure something but I don't know what. I'm 100% the solution has to come on the iPad end since I can make the pairing with a tablet of another brand.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Brittnea

Modern tethering works over WiFi, not Bluetooth. Bluetooth just doesn't have a high enough data rate to handle current wireless data services. Plus WiFi lets you teather multiple devices if you so choose.

The way it works is you turn on WiFi tethering on your phone... In some countries, like the US, the carrier may require an additional tethering service fee... then go into your iPad's WiFi settings and connect it to the network now being generated by the phone.

I looked further into the matter and it turns out the iPad does indeed support BT tethering, with one major caveat: Only some phones are compatible. Even if they can tether with other devices, there is no guarantee that they will work with the iPad.

Now even if your phone does not natively support WiFi tethering, there may be an app for it that will enable such functionality. In fact which searching I ran across one called "JoikuSpot" that claims to do this for Nokia phones. Although it is a bit pricy.

The Nokia 5800 3 year old so it can only do tethering in Bluetooth and I read here and there that it was possible to do a bluetooth pairing between an iPad and another device. Like I said, I can do the bluetooth pairing with a tablet of another brand and the Nokia 5800 so why is the iPad giving me the "unsuccessful pairing" error message?

Thanks

Particularly on smartphones with smaller batteries used as mobile access points, Bluetooth tethering is far more battery-friendly than doing the same with Wi-Fi. That is, it's definitely not an outdated technology. This, among other phones, also applies to most Nokia phones.

Apple's not generally supporting it has more to do with business reasons (not to undermine their 3G models' / iPhones' sales by prohibiting them not to be able to use non-Apple phones to connect to the Net) than with Bluetooth Dial-up Networking being "outdated".
