Disable Autosave for TextEdit with NAS?

I get it...autosave has its place, and it works with versions, etc. I'm not here to preach...those that want total control of your OS should probably not look to Apple or MS for that (and I'm one in the Apple boat).

Anyways, I have this problem:

- open a text file located on my local NAS file server

- delete all the text

- close the file without saving

- reopen the file

- ERR: all the text is gone

- ERR: I can't revert back to the version with all the text there

So it's doing the autosave when I close, and then its assuming that i can revert using Versions. However, since it's on the NAS, there is no Version support.

Is this not a huge loophole in the system? Is there a way I can disable autosave when it's not going to support versionation?
