I am having trouble adding Microsoft office to my I pad

There is currently no publicly available version of Microsoft Office for the iPad. Find a compatible product in the iTunes App Store.

You can't. Microsoft does not make an iOS version of Office.

There are MS Office compatible apps available in the app store like Quick Office Pro and Documents to Go. Take a look at those and see what you think. Apple also has their iWorks suite of apps, Pages, Numbers and Keynote that are compatible with the MS Office apps.

You can only download and install apps for the iPad that are availablein the app store. You cannot download apps from anywhere else.

Since there is no Microsoft Office for the iPad there is no way you can download it to the iPad.
