How do I copy and paste a Chinese character into a search field?

Using Google Translate I can get a Chinese character but can't see how to copy it to a Chinese dictionary.

Tap on the character and hold until the option to Copy the charater appears. Then tap & hold in the field where you want to paste the character until the Paste option appears.

It seems to take a long time to get the copy or paste signal to come on. Maybe because the character is small? Maybe I am holding it for too long? The copy signal seems to come up very quickly on a paragraph.
