I have tried to charge an old 40 gb ipod. I can not get it to come on. What could be the problem?

Have you tried everything included in this article?

iPod won't turn on

It could be just that the iPod's battery is shot an in need of replacement, especially given the age of the device. You can purchase a replacement battery for pretty cheap from another of sites such as Amazon or eBay and then use the guides over at http://www.ifixit.com/ to walk you through the replacement procedure.

There are also numerous third party service centers who can put in a new battery at a pretty low cost if you would feel more comfortable going that route.
