It could be just that the iPod's battery is shot an in need of replacement, especially given the age of the device. You can purchase a replacement battery for pretty cheap from another of sites such as Amazon or eBay and then use the guides over at http://www.ifixit.com/ to walk you through the replacement procedure.
There are also numerous third party service centers who can put in a new battery at a pretty low cost if you would feel more comfortable going that route.
