Q: Sort Order of All Unplayed Episodes

The sort order of all unplayed episodes is from Newest to Oldest, which is backwards for me.

Why would I listen to the Newest episode first? It completely breaks any chronology of the podcasts!

I found that you can change this for individual podcasts if you find the details by clicking on the podcast title to open its preferences, but the big list does not have the option.

Please, give me the option to ORDER THE UNPLAYED EPISODES OLDEST AT TOP TO NEWEST AT BOTTOM!

Thanks, in advance.

I completely agree. It is backward for me and from how it is in the Music/iPod app.

Tap on the podcast in the main window, tap the header where you set your subscription preferences, scroll down in this screen, below the "Episodes to Keep" selection is an option to sort this podcast newest first or oldest first.

This helps only on individual podcasts, but it does not do anything for the general Unplayed Episodes playlist, and that is what I need fixed.

This did the trick for me, Harry. Thanks!

I was surprised to see you can/must set this on a podcast-by-podcast basis, but it is hard to argue with having finer control. Oldest to newest seems like a slightly more logical default, but that may just be personal preference.

Not to split off in a new direction, but if I then subscribe to a podcast in Podcasts app that I already subscribe to in iTunes, is it recommended I turn off syncing between iTunes and my iPhone for that podcast? Or will this question basically go away when iOS 6.0 is released?

Do the Podcasts app and the Music/iPod app share podcast files? Or will they be duplicated on my iPhone?

The podcasts will duplicate themselves on your device. I turned off podcast syncing on my devices. But the weird thing is that when I sync, podcasts then copy themselves to my iTunes library. Either sync or don't, but don't copy to both.

Agreed. I went and did it to each individual podcast, but that does nothing for the overall "Unplayed" list. :/

yeah, no sort on the Unplayed list. which seems odd, even if the behavior was correct as is (which it isn't) not being able to change the setting is bad UI

+1 here for sort order oldest to newest on the unplayed list, or give us the option to create smart playlists in podcasts.

Also need the ability to have video podcasts in a different list as I really don;t want to see video podcasts while I am driving.

Also need to have the speed stick between podcast.

I'd want the ability to sort the unplayed playlists by subscription, then oldest to newest, so all the episodes of a particular podcast are oldest to newest one after another.

When you say the "main window", what do you mean?  Is it the window where itunes shows your name and the serial number of your device, etc?  I saw that display a couple of times, but I don't know how to get to it.

Also, I am using iTunes from my PC.  What is "tapping"?

    Hi pixeloflight,

This discussion is exclusively related to Apple's Podcasts iOS app for iPhone, iPod touch, and I assume iPad. These are touchscreen devices and "tapping" means tapping on the screen to select an object as opposed to using a mouse on a computer.

    Take care,

    Tom

Yes!!!! For the love of all that is holy please let us control the order like is possible in individual podcast.  Now with Serial returned, I can't use the Unplayed feature because it comes in the wrong order!!!

I concur with this, the general Unplayed Episodes playlist in the Podcasts App should have more sorting options.  I use to have my podcasts setup perfectly by runtime, via an iTunes playlist.  However, the Podcasts App does not allow personalized playlists, is terrible at syncing, unsubscribes randomly from podcasts, and has a very rigid view of how things should be organized.

These technical issues are about more than just a malfunctioning application; it is limiting our freedom of choice.

    To resolve this, an easy fix can be made: The Unplayed Episode list should have several sorting options, including (but not limited to);

    - Runtime (Shortest First)

    - Runtime (Longest First)

    - Listening time Left (Shortest First)

    - Most Recent

    - Least Recent

    - Alphabetically by Series title

    - Most Popularly Listened To

This is really necessary, because Silicon Valley needs to give us more choices, not less.
