macbook air 2012 + thunderbolt display.
after about 3 or 4 minutes of audio coming out of the display, the sound turns to static and then pure static.
streaming spotify, pandora, itunes, even happens during video chatting.
audio on MBA 2012 is fine without connecting it to the thunderbolt.
please help.

Hate to be another me-too, but here I am.
MBA 11" 2012 2.0Ghz i7, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD and the Thunderbolt display.
I am experiencing this issue as well. Anyone have a solution or a fix to this problem yet?
I am going to be taking my new air back if I cannot get a fix to this...
I bought my Thunderbolt display last week and just noticed same issue. Playing music through iTunes I sometimes get terrible static, which only goes away by restarting iTunes.
Same here. I returned my TBD and 2012 13" MBA (replaced with another set) and I still have the same issue after playing music for a few mins...
This also happens to me. I just bought a 2012 MB Air and a refurbished Thunderbolt display. After 3 minutes or so, the audio turns to static. I have to restart the app which is driving the audio (Spotify for me in this case).
NOT HAPPY.

Apple released an update for MacBook Air's and Pro's today. Did that fix the issue?

I was having the same problem. It seemed to go away after updating to the latest OS update from a few days ago: OS X 10.8.2 (12C54)
I have encountered this sound corruption as wlel with my new TBD. I run a MBP Retnia tied to 2 Promise Pegassus Raid arrays. I took the monitor in for Apple to check and of course they were unable to reproduce the issue. I started nosing aound the net an came upon Anandtechs TBD review.

On that page listed, it seems Anand reveals the source of this issue (at least in my case). It stems from high I/O read and write of the Pegassus drives. In fact the issue most likely is with the Pegassus drives firmware.
I'm going to pick up my TBD from apple and will bring it up to the Apple tech. And I will also call Promise, to see what they know of the issue.
So do any of you also have a Promise Pegassus raid in your setup?
