HDMI sound problem. Please help with nimble responses!

I have my Macbook Pro connected to my HD Sony TV via HDMI cable and adaptor. Video/images come through fine, but no audio comes through. The option to choose the TV as an output option isn't available. I can't seem to find it anywhere. What do I do?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

What video output does your MacBook Pro have? Is it a mini-DVI, or mini-DisplayPort? If it's a mini-DVI, then as Roger said, DVI does not support audio and you'll need to run a separate cable. If your MPB has a mini-DisplayPort output, then it will depend on your model. See:

If you have an appropriate model and it's not passing audio, you may have a defective adapter or need to consult the settings for that HDMI input on your TV.

Regards.
