headphones broke off inside macbook

Part of my headphones broke off inside my (4 year old) macbook- i took it in store and they said there was no way of getting the piece out- they told me to use a midi cable but i have one and don't see how it will help me as i have nothing to connect it to- how can i get sound on my computer or attach it to speakers without using the headphone socket?
