Airplay icon is gone

Airplay icon is gone

My airport express is logged into my existing wireless network (nice pretty green light after a fair amount of work) and connected to my stereo. Airplay icon on iPad shows up one day (and everything works great) and then the icon is no longer available. Works fine occasionally and then simply disappears.

I've reset the Airport Express (multiple times). I've hard reset the Airport Express (multiple times). I've hard reset the iPad (multiple times). Next step is to hard reset the Airport Express through the window and on to the street below! At least I'll feel better.

Any ideas?

If the icon is disappearing, that could be due to a weak wi-fi signal and/or interference. Are you reasonably close to the Express, and have you tried different channels? Also, are you using WEP encryption? If so, WPA2 is much more secure and tends to play nicer with iOS devices.

I'm using WPA2 already. My wireless router, the iPad2 and the Airport Express are all within 5 feet of each other. When you say "try different channels" what do you mean?

All routers can use different channels, which are slightly different frequencies. A different channel may be less susceptible to interference (if that's what's going on).

But is your iPad a 3G model? If so, is 3G active even though you're using wi-fi? With my iPhone I have a problem where AirPlay will drop out periodically and the only way to prevent that is to either (a) put the iPhone into Airplane mode and turn wi-fi back on, or (b) turn off Bluetooth. If I do either of these things, AirPlay works flawlessly.

So, if your iPad is a 3G model, either turn off cellular data and/or turn off Bluetooth to see if it behaves any better.
