Connect Time Capsule to another router wirelessly

This is my situation: I have a regular Netgear router in another room different from the one I have my computer. One important thing is that in this room, the one I work in, there's no WAN connector. Of course, there is one in the room where the router is connected.

I would like to use a Time Capsule, but having it in this room, instead of the one where the router is. That would mean that Time Capsule would not be wiredly connected to the router. The only wire connected to Time Capsule would be the power cord.

Would this be possible? Which limitations would this set up have?

I hope you can help me, thank you.

Possible? Yes

Supported by Apple? No

Reliable? Not in my opinion

Upsides......No Ethernet cable, backups occur over wireless only

Downsides.....Backups occur over wireless only, no option to use Ethernet for backups, difficult configuration for most users, very slow backups

When backing up, the wireless signal must pass from the computer to the wireless router....one "hop".....and then it must pass by wireless again from the wireless router to the Time Capsule.....a second "hop". That doubles the chance of an error occuring during a backup.

The double "hop" also means that backups will occur much slower compared to one "hop".

So, while I can tell you how to try to do this, I cannot guarantee that it will work well, or even work at all. My recommendation would be to connect the Time Capsule to your wireless router using an Ethernet cable.

Please take some time to consider things and wait for opinions from other users before you make a decision.

You will need BOB to confirm this but it might be possible to use the 5ghz on a dual band TC.. and still have just one hop wireless connection and still joined by wireless to the Netgear.. I haven't attempted it but it would be worth it as long as you have a dual band model.. ie anything other than Gen1.

When you say you would like to use the TC.. do you mean just for backups??

If so then this can be easily done.. keep using wireless as you are doing to get internet. Simply run ethernet to the TC and set it in router mode I think is easier for this. But without a wan connection.. that won't matter.. Turn off wireless in the TC and set the IP manually in the computer to say.. 10.0.1.10 with 255.255.255.0 subnet.. no router (gateway and no dns).

You can then backup to the TC fast by ethernet and still have internet via wireless.

The problem here is that the TC would have to "join" the Netgear network and "create" the 5 GHz signal at the same time. It can only "join"....or...."create". It cannot do both at the same time.

This is what I hope that HectorKyze will decide is best.

But, he says that he wants to do this using wireless only....and I am trying to convince him that this type of setup has many more downsides than upsides.

Of course.. slaps hand on forehead.. Apple has such limited setup options you of course couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time.

Okay, so the plan would be connecting my iMac to the TC using ethernet? And that way I would use TC just for backups, right?

By the way, I was thinking about this and I came up with another possible solution, although I'm not really sure if it would work. I should have thought about this sooner... A few years ago I connected the router to an Xbox 360 (yes, it's from Microsoft...) that is in this room, using a reaaally long ethernet cable. I forgot about it because I no longer use it. What if I used that ethernet cable that goes from the router to this room (exactly what I need) to connect the Time Capsule? Would it work?

Thank you!

My suggestion would be to connect the Time Capsule to an Ethernet port on your router using an Ethernet cable.

If you do not need the wireless network that the Time Capsule provides, it can be easily turned "off".

That will allow you to backup using wireless over your current existing network, or you would also have the option to connect your Mac directly to the Time Capsule temporarily using another Ethernet cable for large backups.

Backups using Ethernet will probably be 4-5 times faster than using wireless.
