Q: IP address for stand-alone MacPro?

I have a MacPro (OS X 10.7.2) NOT connected to network/internet. Installed Parallels 7, installed Windows Server 2008 R2 as a guest OS.  Need to develop web page materials & test in Server 2008 environment, and want to browse site from a Mac Safari window.  Cannot ping Windows guest using terminal window - only get timeouts.  Cannot ping Mac host from Windows environment - no IP address for Mac.  Mac Network is set in 'Host Networking' mode only.

Generally with nothing handing out IP, like a Router, then it'll be in the 169.254.x.x range.

On the OSX side, Apple logo>About this Mac>System Report>Network, what IPs are listed?

    Your response helped me...  Thanks!

Initially - none.  Plus I showed a 'connection error - cable unplugged' condition all the time.  So I added a ethernet switch and connected MacPro to it with no other connections from the switch.  Rebooted Mac and now have IP 169.254.173.139.  Server 2008 Command window shows IP 169.254.41.101.  I can ping MacPro environment from Server 2008 environment, but cannot ping Server 2008 environment from MacPro environment.  I am going to start looking into possible firewall issues in both environments...

MacPro Network now set to {configure IPv4: Using DHCP} and also comes up with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 (same subnet mask as on Server 2008 ipconfig.

    Izeke,

What happens if you in finder, select Go menu>Connect to Servers..., type in smb://ip.of.another.computer, like...

    smb://169.254.41.101

Have you tried lowering the Firewall on the Server 2008?

You ARE helping!  Firewalls now OFF.  Rebooted all.  {guestOS computer name is now "S2008"}  I can now ping Mac-to-guestOS and guestOS-to-Mac.  I created a user acocunt in GuestOS, then in Mac Finder>ConnectToServer>smb//164.254.41.101 I was prompted for a login/password.  When entered, was then prompted for 'which volumes do you wish to mount' - so I know it "works" (I just have not yet put any volumes out there to be available for remote mounting.

I have working IIS 7.5 in guestOS with a valid web page that opens/displays within the guestOS environment/browser.  Have not figured out what url to put in Mac Safari browser to get to the same page.  Does not seem to be in DNS completely/correctly?  I should be able to "ping S2008" but name cannot be resolved (unknown host).  Noted in guestOS ipconfig /all there is no gateway or DNS suffix filled-in...

Good to see we're making some headway!

What do you have entered for DNS in Mac's Network Pref Pane? Might add 169.254.41.101
