    I had the same problem.


    I restarted without luck so I opened the system preferences and clicked on Sound. Clicked the output tab and choose from there internal speakers. It worked. I never messed up with that so I do not know why the internal speakers were not selected.

    Randomly two days ago, I had no sound coming from iTunes or any internet based videos and that fixed my problem (System Preferences->Sound->Output->Internal Speakers).  For some reason in my sound preferences the Logmein sound driver was checked.  Not sure how that happened, but thanks for the tip.

    I had a similar problem with my MacBook Pro 17" (latest version). The internal speakers stopped working and disappeared from the Sound Output choices, but the headphones does work.

    In another thread they recommended inserting a tooth pick into the headphone jack. I actually removed and plugged in the headphone (while listening to music) a couple of times and the speakers came back on.

    I will monitor this situatioto find out what is causing the problem. I am using a new headphone with noise cancelling (battery operated), and a 27" Apple monitor with thunderbolt.

    I tried everything. Nothing worked and I plugged in some earbuds and bam, it popped back on when I unplugged them. My mac wasn't dirty and I never used headphones before.

    Its worth a shot.

    Just plug in buds, worked for me.

    Recently, my experience was the same as yours with no sound coming from my iTunes or internet based videos.


    The only sound was from booting up. 


    Your suggestion also fixed my problem (System Preferences->Sound->Output->Internal Speakers).


    In my sound preferences the Logmein sound driver was also checked for some odd reason.


    I'm also not sure how or why that happened, but following your very simple directions worked for me as well!

    Not sure if this will help anyone but having had this problem for 2 weeks now [on and off] it seemed the only link I had was it happened after I'd remotly logged in.  Basically the sound didn't work when I went back to the iMac, just like it doesnt when you remotly access it.


    I logged out of the remote programe I was using, in this case logmein, and the sound started fine - I've also tried this with a couple of remote apps and they all mute the volume untill they are disconnected/exited.


    This is fine if say logmein is open so long as its not been remotly accessed, once its been accessed even after teh connection is closed I have to physicallly exit the app, even if a restart has taken place.


    May work for some.

    Hi!  Actually, before you do anything, check the battery in your keyboard.  


    On my screen I got the low battery message and I ignored it and then I spent a bunch of time googling my problem, read questions & replies to same question, rebooted, check system prefs, etc.  Before packing up your imac and taking to best buy et al, change your batteries in your keyboard.  It worked for me!

    Same thing just happened to me, and the common symptom for me was logging in with LogMeIn.  Evidently, after the login, the device for sound output gets switched to LogMeInSoundDriver and doesn't change back to Internal Speakers.


    I wonder if LogMeIn is aware of this, or would this be better addressed by Apple?

    If you got no audio, you might first want to check if any program is frozen. Press (cmd, alt, esc) and check if there is any app not responding. Note that it also might be application that run automaticly on startup, so restart wont help always, or the problem might occur randomly later.


    I had this same problem today, and i started closing programs to restart computer. I had one app frozen, and after i force quit it, all audio started to work immediatly.


    I made couple test.. Looks like any app with connection to audio device freeze, it also stops any other sounds until you force quit it. App that freeze doesnt even need to actually be playing any audio at the moment.

    THX, Ihave tried every thing until I read this post. IT WAS CORRECT, check settings, I´ve used Logmein many times, but this never happend before.

    Same here, plugging headphones and shaking them up in the plug made the trick... Go and figure! Thanks for the tip!

    I tried putting a headphone jack in a few times and pulling it out. That solved the problem.

    just had the same issue, inserted and removed headphone jack a couple of times , sound came on.  Probably some dust or internal clip not springing back to closed position.
