How Do I Publish iWeb Sites For Uploading To Another Web Host?

I have been using iWeb exclusively to publish to my MobileMe account. However, with MobileMe ending in 5 days, I need to publish my sites with a new web host.

However, I can't figure out how to do that. There used to be an option to Publish to a Folder so the site could be uploaded somewhere besides Apple's servers. Am I missing something or has this been removed from iWeb 3.0.4?

The sites I downloaded from iDisk do not function correctly on my new web host server. I'm assuming that this has to do with the way the sites are saved for MobileMe versus publishing for a third party server.

What's the trick here?

The MobileMe only features can be replaced by alternatives...

If you have folders of assets outside of the main website folder on MobileMe, download them from the Apple server. From the Finder Go menu, follow the path iDisk/My iDisk/ to get there. Your website files are in the Web/Sites folder. Drag any files/folders onto the desktop.

Use an FTP application to upload these assets to the root folder on your new server...

There are lots of options for hosting for about half the cost of MobileMe...

If you have an existing domain name, you need to point it to your new account. Contact your domain name registrar about this. Your hosting company will supply you with the necessary info - mainly the nameservers. Note that its a lot more convenient to transfer your domain name registration to your hosting company.

If you have been using a web.me.com domain name, you need to register a new one. Most hosting services give you at least one free and registering with your hosting company will make forwarding and managing it a lot easier.

Make sure you add the new name to Google and create, upload and enter a new sitemap.xml...

Publishing via the iWeb FTP is very straight forward. Just use the settings shown in the first example on this page...

If you want to add tags for SEO and/or optimize the files for faster download, use the second method and have a look at this workflow...
