Great problem on interlaced footage

Hi all,

I've just started to shoot 1080/50i footage (AVCHD) with a compact camera (Sony HX20V).

My final target is bluray.

I've transcoded with Compressor the original .MTS to Apple ProRes 422 LT.

Edited (in FCP 7.0.3) with some basic cuts and cross dissolve a bunch of test clips transcoded as above.

Produced the bluray with the "share" function.

The result, seen on a 42" plasma TV is awful: a lot of terrible combing and artifacts on any moving object/subject.

My "fixing" strategy will be:

- "sanitize" the system, erasing Perian and the Panasonic AVCHD importer

- verify the Compressor settings for ProRes 422 LT: here i need for your help !!!

- give a try to ClipWrap to transcode .mts->Prores

Any other idea?

Thanks a lot in advance

Finalise your edit with all the trimmings (disolves, effects, etc) Do all renders required and export video with the current settings option. Convert to H264 or whatever format you use for blue ray at full quality within Compressor and make syre that size is the same as source video (i pressume 1920X1080 50i). Alternatively you can import the FCP output video to your authoring software and take it from there.

Btw, what do you use to author your BR disc?

For this try i've used the "share" function within FCP (obviously choosing Bluray from the dropdown menu) that produces a very basic menu in a ready to burn bluray structure (BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders).

I've just discovered that is the Compressor transcoded footage (ProRes 422 LT) that has the problem.

At the following link a stop frame that obviously emphasize the problem but that gives the idea

So i need for a guide for the right setting to put in Compressor to make the transcoding in ProRes.

Thanks again 🙂

Ok here it is regardless of whatever Prores flavor you use:

1) These are the video/sound settings: Leave as is

2. Frame controls. They should be off so that they take their cues from the source files.

3. Video adjustments leave untouched/ with all buttons unchecked

4. The size tab. Make sure that it is set to a 100% of source

5. Target tab. Leave as is

Check your original settings before you set out converting your source material from scratch. If those match the ones above then it is most likely that the problem lies in your sequence settings in fcp. The sequence settings should be something like this:

Please keep us posted.

Is the field dominance in both your sequence and clip format set to upper? Additionally when you play your prores clips in quick time (and not within FCP) how do they look?

Yes is the same, and the problem is present also playing the clip with QT.

I meant Use log and transfer if you can.

Made a test with log and transfer but the problem is still there.

I've made also a "final" verification.

A friend of mine did a ProRes 422 LT conversion on the SAME .MTS clip produced by my camera:

the problem was NOT present also watching the clip on my system.

Then it is my HW/SW setup that have a bug.

I paste here below what i think are relevant infos about my system (it is in italian but i think is pretty clear).

I kindly ask you if you see something "suspect" or if you need some other info.

Thanks again to all.
