Podcasts App... Not Syncing Correctly.

After downloading the amazing new Podcasts App, that Apple released yesterday, Suddenly whebever I plugged in my iPod Touch, the podcasts are marked as unplayed or unwatched. Apple needs to fix this major bug, because I'm often in areas with wifi to stream podcasts.

If I mark it as watched/played on my computer, in iTunes, it will NOT sync the unwatched podcasts (which is good, because that's what we want).

It appears for now, we need to manually do this until Apple responds. I'll call Apple Support later.

Having only 8GB, you are always concerned about storage space.

UPDATE: I called Apple support. They were very good, and asked me to unistall iTunes, and reinstall it, because iTunes 10.6.3 wouldn't download on my Windows 7 PC. The new iTunes (10.6.3) didn't work. (if you saw this earlier I said that it did work, because I accidentally pressed on the Macbreak Weekly play button in iTunes on Windows, which marked it as half played).

See, what I did, is to double check, I marked a 2 minute podcast that I had previously downloaded as unplayed, and it synced to my iPod Touch. I then, played it back completely and synced it again. On my iPod Touch, in the Podcasts app it says it was played. In iTunes on WIndows it says it has not been played, so it stays on my iPod, taking up valuble space.

Why Apple, Why must you make this confusing and difficult?

Apple created the Podcasts app to be a stand-alone application. Both iTunes and Podcasts store their media in the same area in iOS and that is why we see them in both apps (Music on iOS). However the Podcasts app does not update the same stats that the Music app does, hence iTunes will not sync correctly. iOS6 will do away with podcasts in the Music app so iTunes syncing will either 1) not be supported, 2) updated to support podcasts in the Podcasts app.

My 2 cents worth

I am running iTunes 10.6.3 on a Mac, which is running OS X 10.8.1. I have an iPad 3 running iOS 5.1.1 with the most current version of the Podcasts. All the podcasts on my Mac are flagged to sync to my iPad 3. I tried a couple simple deletion tests to see how syncing is working for me:

1. I deleted a podcast in iTunes and then synced iTunes to my iPad 3. I did this once with my iPad 3 connected to my Mac via USB cable, then I did the test again using wifi sync. In both cases, the podcast was deleted from within the Podcasts app on my iPad 3. So this worked I as expected it to work.

2. I deleted a podcast in the Podcasts app and then synced my iPad 3 to iTunes. Again, I did this once with my iPad 3 connected to my Mac via USB cable, then I did the test again using wifi sync. In both cases, the podcast was copied from iTunes back into the Podcasts app on my iPad 3. This is not how I would have expected it to work.

It appears that the podcasts library in iTunes is acting as the master library. Make a change there and sync your devices to iTunes, and all is ok. But using the Podcasts app to control your master podcasts library and have it sync to and be consistent all your devices? It appears that it is not yet designed to do this.

I'm not too worried about sync, here's what I've been doing for years . Every morning I download NBC nightly news, if its something really newsworthy I save them. All I had to do is hook up my iPhone where the downloaded podcast is and do a sync to my laptop. It would now show up in my iTunes library, but now no matter what I do, I can not save the podcast that are on my phone. Can anyone tell me what is up? It has to be the new app because I've never had this problem.

It all seems to be working for me now, although it runs like two separate systems that talk to each other... iTunes and iOS. iTunes sync with iOS and non-iOS devices is working the way it always did, except podcasts are no longer saved to video and music, they are saved to the podcast app. iOS devices now have an added benefit of keeping each other in sync independent of iTunes.

  • Setup: iPhone 5 and iPad 3, both running iOS 6 and both running the Podcast app. Mac running latest version of Mountain Lion.
  • iTunes on the Mac is set up to sync podcasts with my iOS and iPod devices.
  • The iOS devices – running the new Podcast app – keep each other in sync automagically. They do not automatically sync with iTunes on the Mac.
  • If you sync the iOS devices with your Mac – wireless or wired – the podcasts are synced and the place you were at in the time is captured.
  • Non-iOS devices (iPods and ATVs) sync with the Mac as usual.

It's still a bit of a Frankestein solution because it is still two architectures trying to coexist, but I suspect when we get the new iTunes next month, the coupling with iTunes, iCloud, and iOS devices will get even tighter, so that device syncing with your Mac isn't required.

I don't know if I agree about seeing this behavior in my configuration.

Currently I have a Win7 machine with iTune 7 and 2 iOS 6 devices (iPhone 4s and iPad 2).

What I want is for the podcasts I have downloaded on iTunes to be reflected on my iOS devices (unless I turn it off).

In the past this worked fine when I used the Podcast portion of the music app. But this does not work on the PodCast app. What I see is a mixture of podcasts - some old, some new, and they don't reflect what I have on iTunes.

Some have said to turn off subscriptions and just do my synching via the wire to get it on there (my old iPod classic still works this way). That's fine. Is this the right route?

I'm hoping the new iTunes will fix this in the future (October) and all devices will stay synched (except for the Win7 device that isn't talking to iCloud correctly - at least I'm not sure if it is).

Thoughts?

Thanks!
