Podcasts App... Not Syncing Correctly.

After downloading the amazing new Podcasts App, that Apple released yesterday, Suddenly whebever I plugged in my iPod Touch, the podcasts are marked as unplayed or unwatched. Apple needs to fix this major bug, because I'm often in areas with wifi to stream podcasts.

If I mark it as watched/played on my computer, in iTunes, it will NOT sync the unwatched podcasts (which is good, because that's what we want).

It appears for now, we need to manually do this until Apple responds. I'll call Apple Support later.

Having only 8GB, you are always concerned about storage space.

UPDATE: I called Apple support. They were very good, and asked me to unistall iTunes, and reinstall it, because iTunes 10.6.3 wouldn't download on my Windows 7 PC. The new iTunes (10.6.3) didn't work. (if you saw this earlier I said that it did work, because I accidentally pressed on the Macbreak Weekly play button in iTunes on Windows, which marked it as half played).

See, what I did, is to double check, I marked a 2 minute podcast that I had previously downloaded as unplayed, and it synced to my iPod Touch. I then, played it back completely and synced it again. On my iPod Touch, in the Podcasts app it says it was played. In iTunes on WIndows it says it has not been played, so it stays on my iPod, taking up valuble space.

Why Apple, Why must you make this confusing and difficult?

Its been said a few times on this forum but the only way to go is to DELETE this truly awful piece of APP Everything then goes into itunes when you synch to your computer.

I was travelling last weekend and decided to go for about 5 days with no laptop. I installed the podcast app in my iphone before i left. All my podcasts went over there and i used it while i was away..Still EXTREMELY annoying had to resubscribe and fiddle around to download as i have no signal except wifi with my UK phone in the USA...but it was the only way to get podcasts.

Then when i returned and deleted it tho i had to re download and re synch it took me almost no time toget itunes back in top form. SO MUCH simpler.

I'm kind of with you. Chose to do the load the app when I travelled too but did it a little different. I refreshed all my podcasts in iTunes on the computer then after loading the app back on I synched the iPhone. It was reasonably clean so I went away on my trip. I was careful to not delete ANY of the podcasts I listened to (including the ones I downloaded while away) and synched again when I got home (I have automatic downloads of podcasts turned off) thinking that the iPhone would truly synch. This is where the steam starts to rise for me. It's wierd it gets some. Then you synch again and it gets some maybe. Maybe not. Then you refresh in iTunes and some download duplicates some don't. It's goofy.

Whole point of my Classic iPod is for Podcasts and iTunes, neither of which are functioning. Tunes are partially syncing, Podcasts not recognized at all. This discussion is long, old and over my head. And apparently not fixed by Apple. I took the iPod back to the store the next day and they gave me another. Still the same. They took my first iPod because the battery was worn down and I was still in warranty. Why is it people talked me into Apple? My Dell XPS one was just as bad. But my first of three iPod did work, all 27,000 tunes and all Podcasts were updating.

Did the above discussion get resolved ever?

The issues in this thread are not resolved yet. Until Mac-based iTunes can synchronize with iCloud-based iTunes… or maybe iTunes store… they won't be solved. Until then, the podcast app is useless. Everybody I know who has tried to find a way to make it work has failed, and deleted it from their iOS devices. It's pretty sad that Apple released an app for podcasts that works better for non-Mac and non-iTunes users than it does for their existing customer base.

If you are using a classic iPod, these issues shouldn't affect you. You should still be able to sync your iPod to your Mac and iTunes without any issues. I have two different kinds of iPods and I don't have any issue syncing podcasts to them. I suggest you go over the settings for your iPod in iTunes. Make sure that under the info tab you understand whether or not you are syncing only checked selections or not. Under the podcast tab, make sure that you've selected 'sync podcasts' and the podcasts you want are selected to sync.

Everyone including WGQ is completely correct. The absolute only fix for this is for Apple to finally allow Podcasts to sync through the cloud to Macs. Seems like such a simple fix & it would no longer be an issue.

However, there is INCREDIBLY GOOD NEWS! By the end of the month Downcast is supposed to release their Desktop Podcast App in the Mac Appstore. Everyone can officially ditch the Podcasts app. Download Downcast for iPhone/iPad & download Downcast for Mac & everything (minus Apple TV) will officially be syncing properly through the cloud. Leave it to another company to do what Apple should have done with version 1.0 let alone after 5,000+ negative reviews, 100's of forums complaining about the app, & over a year of time. I for one seriously can not wait to make this switch. Official release price will be $9.99 for Mac version.

WGQ: I 100% agree. The times I do that, I just bite the bullet & use Airplay. I have 2 Macs (Home & Work), an iPhone, an iPad, & 3 Apple TV's that I regularly utilize for Podcasts. The 2 Macs is the real sticking point for me though. You can't even successfully sync podcasts to 2 different Macs, which is incredibly stupid. At least Downcast will solve all, but 1 of those problems & can be alleviated (although I admit, annoyingly) through Airplay.

Scionwest: That is not a workable solution for me. Listen to far too many podcasts on different Macs to be dealing with Airplaying stuff all the time. My work computer will not be upgraded to Mavericks. (not my choice) In addition, my home iMac is a 2009? Which is not compatible with Airplay for iMac to Apple TV so I will assume it will not Airplay iOS to OSX.

The 1 & only solution is for Apple to finally listen to their customers & release an app capable of iCloud syncing to all their products. CHARGE ME! I pay for iTunes Match. I would gladly pay for an app with this capability. I'm paying for Downcast the moment it comes out & that will finally be a decent solution.

Unfortunately, Apple doesn't seem to be fixing it. It annoys the heck out of me as well, but after 9 pages of complaining, there doesn't seem much of a point of doing it anymore. It would be more benificial to people if instead of wasting another 9 pages of complaints, we add some optional work arounds.

For those that will be able to, Airplay does not take any more effort to use than launching iTunes and playing them. You launch podcast, hit play, send through airplay. Takes an extra 5 seconds, and the AirPlay stream remains continuous until you disable it, so you enable it and stream all day.

For those that can't, Downcast is a valid one, but their OS X app sucked when I tried using it a couple weeks ago. It does at least provide another method to sync content between a Mac and an iDevice.

Another option for those that can't use Airplay due to not being able to upgrade, AirServer provides Airplay functionality for OS X. I use it on a daily basis and it does not add any pain at all. Not to sure why people say it's a pain to use.

Lastly, I understand Airplay is a work around for iCloud sync and we all don't want a work around. However, it's no different than using Downcast as a work around for lack of Podcast iCloud Sync.

So instead of putting down valid work arounds as useless, because you want Apple to fix something that is probably low on their priority list, does not help promot it to a higher priorty. Apple has proven that Podcasts is very low on their priority list, so work arounds are all we have. It's either use them or stop listening to podcasts. Complaining after 9 pages won't fix it 🙂

Edit: If none of these option work for you, rather than complaining that they don't work for you, provide input as to what methods you have looked into that DO work for you. It's a Support community, not a "It must be my way or it's worthless" community 🙂

Another quick post on this.

Workarounds are not meant to be the permanent way to use the product that's bugged. Workarounds are a means to use the product as you want, in a non-official manor, until the bug is fixed. Video quality of Airplay has no issues, I stream it in 1080p and 720p all the time, with out any issues, provided that your podcasts are HD. This fixes the issue of syncing and providing access to your podcasts when away from home.

It's a work-around, intended to help you out until it is fixed, it's not intended to be the final end-product solution. Just trying to be helpful 🙂

Jul 21, 2013 8:12 PM in response to Scionwest

If you read through all of these inputs, you'll note that an exhaustive set up workarounds has been tried. Some are sufficient for some people because they aren't trying to use the entire Apple ecosystem. Not for me. For me, three workarounds that still don't solve all the problems is the same as no ecosystem. I might as well be using android. Most of us just took a step backwards to iTunes syncing and the limitations that come with that. As soon as there is a working alternative to Apple, I'm sure many of us will jump to it. As I expressed previously, I'm greatly disappointed in Apple's inability to address such a fundamental ecosystem problem. I expect this from android because of the multivendor fragmentation, but I expect Apple to fix these problems because they have end-to-end reach over their ecosystem.

Jul 21, 2013 8:20 PM in response to WGQ

Like I said, I agree it's sad that they haven't addressed this, and yes I have read all nine pages. I have been a part of this thread for months and seen the work arounds. My point was that adding additional complaints at this point is basically a waste of time. There are work arounds that work, they do solve the issue. The problem is that people want it perfect (as it should be), and are not willing to mess with work arounds. I pull down 60+ podcasts a week, listen to them in my car on my phone, at my office on my iPad, at my house on my Mac using several of the work arounds provided, and have been able to get by without issues.

No, this is not ideal, but it allows me to listen to my podcasts when I want, where I want. If a road is closed for construction, you don't just park there and wait 9 months for it to re-open. You find another route. Either a different product, or a different platform, eitherway in today's modern internet age, there is always a work around for those that aren't stuck on waiting for the road to re-open.

To be clear, I'm extremely disapointed in Apple as well. The whole iTunes issue, iCloud in general, OS X 10.8 issues and iOS related stuff has driven me closer to Android, but I'm still here, so here's hoping they eventually fix it!
