I'm referring to the actual icon to access all applications - not a particular app.
This is the second time this has happened. Last time it randomly reappeared.
I've tried dragging it back from both the Finder and the Hard Drive icons, but although it looks like it's adding it, it doesn't. HELP,please!
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
Tried all the suggestions, but still no luck. Just tried right clicking on Applications in Finder, clicked Get Info and noticed the lock in the lower right corner. Unlocked it, tried it again and it worked.
Still don't know how it was removed in the first place, but at least it's back.

You're talking about " Launchpad "?
If so, go to your applications folder and you'll see it there.
From there, drag it to your dock.
I tried dragging it to my dock before i gave you that suggestion to see if it works.
I'm not sure why it's not working in your dock.
I might be way off on this but it's worth a try:
open disk utility and do a verify disk, then do a verify disk permissions. repair if needed and restart your macbook. try dragging again, if it hasn't showed up after you restart and see if that works...
Do you mean to access the Applications folder? You would need to drop it below or to the right of, depending on where you keep the dock, the dashed line separating apps from files.
I am dragging it there, but it won't drop. It allows me to drag it and looks like it will show up, but never does. Same thing happened last time and then it just randomly reappeared!
Sorry, reply wasn't clear - I was responding to Austin. Bimmer 7 Series, I'm talking about the actual "Applications" icon.
Where are you dragging it from? In Finder select your hard disk. Applications should be the top of the contents. Drag it from there to the Dock.
He want's LaunchPad not the applications folder...
Maybe, but the top post shows 10.6.8, and LaunchPad was introduced with Lion ...
