Q: the phone overheated and shut down

My iphone 4 overheated and shut down , it said it needed to cooloff and then after a few minutes i turned it back on. Why is is overheating?

Um... because it's too hot...

We have no idea what the circumstances are. Where in the world you are, what the weather is like, whether you are using it in direct sunlight, what you're doing at the time...

Maybe you could try giving us a little more information.
