Q: Macbook Pro Retina runs hot while lid is closed and fans working at full speed

When i open the lid and check the activity monitor a different process runs at 100% everytime.  After I open the lid the process goes back to normal, the mbp cools down and fans slow down.  It only started happening after few days of use.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Ok, I was about to go to bed and figured I'd test this out more tomorrow.  I debated whether I wanted to shut down, put to sleep or just close the lid before I went to bed.  I opted to click the apple icon and select to go to sleep while leaving my display open.

The system immediately turned off the screen and went to sleep.  I turned around to turn the light off and about 10 seconds later the system just turned itself back on and brought me to the encryption login form (using full disk encryption) .  The only way it gets here is through a hard reset or shut down, so putting the system to sleep crashed it.

I had the chrome browser opened when I put it to sleep and I have hundreds of messages about the same time about the Chrome Helper: failed to lookup bootstrapper during domain extension errors.  Not sure if its related but possible I guess.

    Any ideas?

I closed Chrome and tried this again.  If I tell the system to go to sleep, it shuts off the monitor and within 5-10 seconds it chimes and reboots.  So Sleep is definitely crashing my system.

    Still researching...

Have you tried SMC reset or PRAM reset? If have not lets give it a shot. It might help.

Tried without Chrome and it didn't make a difference.  Will try reseting a few things and will check back later.

Having once the issue. So would need to see whether it would happen again.

Only happened to my MBPR but not to my 4 years old 17" MBP.

It seems that the problem lies with this new ex baby that I have bought!

    Apple. SOS!

I posted some time back about having this problem too. Since then I applied the patch, and upgraded to Mountain Lion, as well as turning off "wake for network access" etc. Since applying the patch I have not had any recurrence of the problem. (Although I am much more likely now to do a complete shutdown when I won't need the machine for a while, and stuffing it in a bag.)  So, for me at least, the patch and Mountain Lion seem to have solved the issue.

Hi, were you able to fix this problem? I just had a similar experience that I put my rMBP to sleep and the fans were going crazy when I took it out 2 hrs later.

I posted this a month ago - haven't had a single reoccurance yet:

    I FIXED MY ISSUE.

The most important thing I did was turn off "wake for network access" in system prefs.   That killed a million console messages - more importantly my MBP-Retina actually goes into full hibernation.   Someone mentioned that the automatic date/time sync was always pinging and causing wake ups.

Then I went throug the console and found everything that pinged and determined if it was something I needed.  I've got lots of leftover junk from previous software.  Then I figured out how to delete them all.  I had a license manager from some old software that kept looking for a licese server, MLB.com's ultracast thingy was always on even though I quit using mlb.tv, etc...

There are some articles about Kernal Extensions that also show you everything that's live all-the-time in your system.  Check those out and see if there are things that don't belong.  PROCEED WITH CAUTION.

Interesting, I already turned that off and I have been having this issue for quite a few times already...

    Hello,

I did EFI update which came out yesterday as well along with major mountain lion update. today morning I was heading to work, Kept my laptop to sleep and came to office and it was piping hot!! and when I clicked power button it turned on. So how was it even getting hot whilst it was asleep unless it went soo hot it turned itself off . Apple should fix this ASAP.

After a few weeks of no problem with the laptop running hot when supposed to be in sleep mode, I just got bit by this again. I found what looks like an obvious cause, which was iMovie was processing some movie clips I imported and was porcessing, but closing the lid should suspend this or warn me. Failure to do this this and with no other obvious visual indication that the machine is actually running, processing and generating heat is going to be deadly since my pretty machine will be going into a bag after I close the lid.

Please, please Apple pay attention to this problem. I do not want to melt my MBPr.

Hi, sorry to jump in late, but is there a fix for this?

I've had my MBPr for about a month now and I've had this happen twice. Very frustrating.

This happened to me first time last week. Closed lid, returned about an hour later to find fan going crazy and machine very hot to touch. When I opened the lid the screen was black and machine unresponsive. Only option was to hold down power button. Machine then booted as normal. All latest Apple updates had been applied before this occurred.

I took the machine to the Apple Store yesterday. They did the following:

    * Ran diagnostics - no issues found

    * Searched logs - nothing unusual

    * Reset SMC

    Outcome:

    * Symptoms hint at issue with Power Nap. But not rule out machine not going to sleep properly.

    * Asked to keep note of when machine is put to sleep.

    * Given reassurance that if occurred again when charging machine would eventually reach max allowed temperature and turn/cut off.

    * If happens again to return the machine for further, more extensive checks
