Q: Macbook Pro Retina runs hot while lid is closed and fans working at full speed

When i open the lid and check the activity monitor a different process runs at 100% everytime.  After I open the lid the process goes back to normal, the mbp cools down and fans slow down.  It only started happening after few days of use.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

    Just took my 10.8.2 retina MBP out of a bag to find it toasting hot with fans running at full speed. Opened the lid and the screen was black and did not come on from tapping keys. I let the fans carry on to cool it and then did a force reboot once they had slowed. Started up fine thankfully - but clearly a bad thing to have a computer stressing it's components in this way - and should not be able to happen. I think it had been put to sleep from the menu before shutting the lid.

    I have just now turned off 'Wake for Wi-Fi network access' along with 'Enable Power Nap' in the hope that this may help avoid repetition of the issue.

    The fist message in the console which looks suspect and is at the time I guess it woke is:

    19/10/2012 22:20:22.000 kernel[0]: Wake reason: EC.DarkPME (Maintenance)

    Anyone know what this means?

    The next few lines are:

    19/10/2012 22:20:22.000 kernel[0]: AirPort_Brcm43xx::powerChange: System Wake - Full Wake/ Dark Wake / Maintenance wake

    19/10/2012 22:20:22.000 kernel[0]: AirPort_Brcm43xx::checkInterfacePowerState: Check _pwrOffThreadCall!

    19/10/2012 22:20:22.000 kernel[0]: RTC: PowerByCalendarDate setting ignored

    19/10/2012 22:20:22.000 kernel[0]: Previous Sleep Cause: 5

    Seems like this thread is long enough to suggest that there should be a software update to prevent a computer from waking if the lid is shut!

    I will add my problem to this thread. MPBR runs super hot when plugged in and lid closed. I often find, when I reopen it, that it has rebooted while closed.

    Apple, please fix.

    Posting again after a weird event. I was sitting at home with my MBPr on my coffee table, lid closed so theoretically in sleep mode when all of a sudden the fans come on full and run for a couple of minutes, until eventually they slow down and the machine gets quiet. I pop open the lid and check things out. It has just restarted and OSX is saying an error has occured and the machine restarted. Bizarre. So going back and thinking thru my own history of opening up my bag to find my poor machine cooking away, maybe this is what's going on. You pop the laptop into your bag in sleep mode and something crashes, even though it should be sleeping, aand the machine restarts.

    Wishing Apple would figure out what's going on here.

    Same here with MBPr running 10.8.2. fan running without reason when lid closed, and even after put it into observation (deep sleep) using Deepsleep. Fan will still start itself after a couple of minutes with lid close

    Fix this lousy bug please Apple. This is the prolem with soft key to turn off and on the machine. Never happen before with MacBook Pro hat have hard mechanical on/off key

    This happened to me as well.  13" Retina Macbook Pro purchased mid-October running OSX version 10.8.1.  Run it normally in clamshell mode connected to a Thunderbolt display.  Disconnected power and display cables.  Put the computer into my carrying bag (cushion also acts as insulator).  Went to concert and then home.  Computer was in bag for about 5-6 hours.  Heard noise coming from bag.  Reached in and computer was almost too hot to touch with fans blazing.  Pulled it out of bag and made video of fans on turbo.  Took it to Mac store and they tried to run diagnostics.  Diagnostics hung so they gave me a new one.  Satisfactory from customer service perspective but I don't want to have to do this every month or so.  Seems like it would be in Apple's interest to fix this to avoid having to give away a bunch of hardware replacements.

    Hi there

    I'm in desperate need of upgrading my system and was thinking of a new 27-inch iMac, keeping my old 17-inch MBP for presenatations only. However, with the new iMacs still yet to be released, potential production issues with the new-design and the general reluctance to be an early adopter ...I've been checking out alternative strategies.

    I have decided to invest in a 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display (fully loaded) and have this power two third-party 24-inch displays, such that the MBPr would operate with the lid closed.

    I understand that most of what's been discussed so far concerns putting the machine to sleep, particularly before storing it in a bag during transit. I'm wondering whether anyone has had heat issues with running a MBPr in the kind of set-up I'm suggesting?

    This happened to me this morning. I closed the lid of my rMBP then placed inside the macbook case, and then into my rucksack alongside an iPad with Smartcover. I checked my rucksack at lunchtime and my bag was really warm.. I checked the macbook and it was scorching hot with fans on full blast.

    This is the first time it has happened.. and the only time I've closed the lid and placed alongside an iPad with Smartcover...

    I'll do some tests this evening with and without a Smartcover in proximity..

    I tested with a smartcover in proximity of the macbook on sleep and this didn't affect it. I guess that rules out the smartcover theory..

    Add me as an unhappy customers Apple. When hibernate my 15 inches MBPR with DeepSleep and close the lid. About 3-4 minutes, mBPR fan will run at high speed without reason, spitting out hot air. And the unit get hot. The fan will ripen for 2-3 minutes,hen it stop and the system  cool down to room temperature and it just sleep fine after that.

    When I open the I'd, my MBPR just start properly.

    I have fled this bug at Apple bug report and the tech there ask me to run  a command in Terminal and send them the report. I did so, and they get back to me a week later saying that it is suspected that the clamshell switch may be faulty and cause error. They asked me to get y Mac to Apple Care.

    I went to Apple Care, and the tech people run a diagnostic test called MRI test. They show me the result that there is no error or fault with the hardware.

    So it must be bug with Mountain Lion.  Never have this problem with Lion.

    Get this fix please Apple

    I think this thread is long enough to indicate epidemic bugs. However, it seems o me that Apple on't care. Thing he torts after Steve Job passed away.

    Since I use DeepSleep to hibernate my MBPR 15 inches. After hitting Hibernate in Deepsleep, the screen turned off. I immediately close the lid. And I reported that my Mac will gt t, and 3-4 minutes after that, Te fan run at full speed, spitting hot air for 2-3 minutes then it stop and ool down. seems to be hibernate fine. When I open the kid, my Mac start one as well.

    I remember that it takes some time for Mac to write RAM content to sleepimage file, and my RAm is 16GB. SSD write speed is around 250 KB/sec, and it will take somewhere between 65-90 seconds to do so. In the old Mac, there is an LED that blink to indicate that RAM content is bing write to disk. That LED was ditched be Apple in MBPR.

    So, I make many tries by waiting 90 seconds after hitting Hibernate in DeepSleep to let the sleepimage to brpevwritten to disk without interruption.

    To my surprise, the fan never run again and he system hibernate gracefully. Apple cut everything to same cost and compromise functionality like FireWire port, LAN port, VGA port, hardware on/off switch, DVD drive, and LED to indicate system activity.

    All theses cut is to rip off more money from users. Apple,mdon't be too greedy, and don't act lie Microsoft and Adobe!

    No it's neither Chrome, nor Xcode. I haven't Chrome installed and haven't opened Xcode for several days, but had top speed fans twice today after my retina macbook woke up.

    On my old MBP I have never seen anything like that (I still use it all the time as my second mac).

    Also I made clean install of Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and it didn't help as well. There wasn't problems for a week and started yesterday.

    I use the same Apps all the time. Only a couple of 3rd party (or additional) apps are installed:

    - Xcode;

    - iWork;

    - Coda 2;

    - Photoshop CS 6;

    - Illustrator CS 6;

    - Dropbox 1.6.2.

    That's all.
