FCPX - I can not find a way to mark/identify clips (or parts of clips) used on the timeline - Even iMovie easily marks used clips.- Manually marking each used clip as Favourite not good enough. Am I missing something ?

It seems there is no way to easily /automatically mark individual clisp once used on the timeline - Even iMovie has this function marking each clip or part therof once used in the timeline with a purple strip. - Suggestions on various info boards to mark clips as "favourite' once put on the timeline is not really good enough as needs to be done manually each time and get's confusing afterwards as to what is a favourite clip or if it means having been used. With many small clips all looking similar for a project such used clip marking (as in iMovie) is almost essential. - Can't belive that FCPX would not have such a function - Am I missing something ?

If you'd like to easily see which event clips are already in your selected project, in the menu select View > Browser > Marked Ranges. This will show an orange line through the precise pieces of the clips used.

Every clip you use in the storyline is listed in the timeline index (bottom left corner of the FCPX window - 2nd icon.) Activate the Timeline Index and select the Clips pane and the Video option at the bottom of the list.

Click on any clip name and type Shift F to get the exact clip/subclip that was used in the storyline no matter what event it is in. Typing Shift F will also automatically select the subclip in the Event browser.

You can click on the Keyword icon (Key) and create a single keyword: used. You can mark all your clips that way (a blue bar will appear at the top of the clip indicating the "range" used) and be able to tell at a glance what you've already used in your project.

You can mark every clip in your project with a mouse click; shift-f; click the keyword icon (if the window isn't already open); click the button of the term to apply.

in addendum to F's as usual excellent reply ... :

my key-combo is shift-F + F

this marks the used selection as a Favorite.

(in case you don't use Favorites for its intended reasons)

you can easiely switch the Events browser to show just 'used' clips.

as a designated, 10y long iMovie user, and knowing FCPX' interface for 4y (=since iM08), the lack of this feature in the pro-app was ..... surprising.

fingers crossed for next update ... 😉

Thank you kindly for taking the time to reply - much appreciated. I have looked around the forums and looks like the Shift F/ Favourites "work-around" is all there is.

Sadly it is just a workaround and difficult to believe that such an essential automatic tool as marking clips that have been 'used' is not included in a professional editor especially when little brother iMovie has this down slick and pat already.. - A professional editor should make life easier not harder and this feature of marking used clips in my opinion is a serious letdown in FCPX. I know now I can make it work somewhat with Shift F etc but it's extra keystrokes, non automatic and a very poor excuse and lousy effort by Apple to not have this auto function of marking used clips. Shift F will get rather confusing if one wanted to also use the actual F funtion to mark any favourites. - Many thanks yr kreplies I really found it hard to believe for FCPX to miss such a simplistic feature

PS: Nice to have such great support from other users. Thank you and wish I knew more to be able to contribute, but am still on the trail of discovery and trial /error with FCPX coming from iMovie / Adobe Premier Elements.

Found a work around to this issue:

First Select All of the clips in your timeline (Cmd+A)

then open the Inspector window (CMD+4)

Under the 'Info' tab there is a user definable field labled 'Camera Name'

In this field name your camera 'Used Clips' or 'Used' or 'Used Footage' whatever helps you

Go to your footage bin in the top right corner click on the Magnifying Glass, this will bring up the Filter Dialog box

Uncheck the Default 'Text' Filter

Next Click on the '+' icon to add a filter

In the dropdown menu select 'Format Info'

Click the first dropdown menu and select 'Camera Name' then either 'includes' or 'does not include' depending on whether you want to hide or show your used media

Finally, fill in the user definable field with the Camera Name you defined earlier in the Inspector (used, used clips, used footage, etc.)

and bam you either see or hide you used clips in the bin and can now work with just those clips or all but those clips.

I leave my inspector open and when I use a clip I type a Z into the notes section. When you look at you clips in list view you can see whch clips have a Z i the notes column. That column can be moved over so it's next to the name of the clip.

I type a Z because I can just do it with my thumb, but you can type in whatever you like. Essentially the Z is like a check mark.
