See if this helps....

Launch Image Capture located in your Applications folder.

Connect your Camera.

Click the pop up menu bottom left side of the Image Capture window where you see: Connecting this camera

Then select an app you want to import photos with.

If you don't see the "Connecting this camera" dialog click the box box with a black arrow bottom left side of hte window to unhide.

Make sure that your FaceTime camera is being recognized by the computer. Under the Apple menu, select "About This Mac," then "More Info..." then System Report. Look under Hardware>USB. You should see "FaceTime HD Camera (Built-in)" listed. If not, then your USB connection is somehow not recognizing the camera. If that's the case, you need to take it into an Apple Store and have them diagnose the problem.

Here are my best suggestions for your webcam problem:

• If Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090

suggestions do not help you, (the "reset" suggested there

often restores normal function,) continue with the following.

• Use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions and then

download and apply the latest Combo Update, for your Mac OS,

the current one is at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1524

• Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart

that completes the Combo update.

Properly applying the Combo version of updates can sometimes correct software problems, but, if your trouble is caused by a hardware problem, there are no user serviceable webcam components. For hardware help, contact an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

BTW-Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD." Regardless of the name of your built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.

Hi,

ClintonfromBirmingham's second Post and EZ Jims's First Link (It is item 3 that says the same thing) is the way you need to go.

(Check what the System Info says about the camera)

If the camera does not show up disconnect all external USB devices and restart the computer and check again if the camera can be seen (it could be a power drain issue).

If it does not show up read EZ Jim's first link again and do the last item (SMC/PMU reset).

I too have this problem in Skype, Messages, Facetime, PhotoBooth, Image Capture, etc. I have a 2011 MBP running OSX 10.8.2. I have followed all the help threads that say to reset the NVRAM / SMC and to repair permissions . I have done those things. The camera does not show up in the system profiler. Does anyone have another suggestion to get the camera working again?

ahoy kingstonian. Sorry to beat a dead horse on ya, but did you see the last comment before yours- the part about disconnect all other devices? And the restart? I follow a restart, often, with a repair permissions or verify permissions(that needs all apps quit to go well).

Then too, check your wires plugs and sockets- worn, bent broken, dust-clogged and dirty orifaces can actually prevent connections while you think you are connected. Items that travel a lot are susceptible especially.

Does the cam show up on your desktop? I guess too I need to ask, are you referring to the built-in camera or a plug in?

Thanks for the reply. I was referring to the built-in camera. I have nothing plugged into any of the ports. I have done the repair permissions and resets of the SMC and NVRAM several times. None of those 'fixes' seem to make any difference. The MBP is in a case when not in use and the computer seldom travels so I don't think it's been abused at all.

The camera was working fine until yesterday when it suddenly wasn't available in any application that uses a camera. If I look at the activity monitor I don't see anything running that would obviously be using the camera. If I have only one app running like Photo Booth the camera is still 'not connected'.

Any sugggestions

Hmmm. The way you describe it now, unless you are a master computer repair person, makes me think call an apple store and make an appointment at the genius bar, and be prepared for them to take it from you for repairs of some sort.

Hoepfully someone will come in the thread with an easy fix. Apologies it cannot be me. I have no idea other than repairing.

Start a new discussion, title it more like "did my camera break or what?' and describe its demise.

New topics are magnets for the folks with hundreds of thousands of points, who have been apple folks from day one.

I am sorry I have no better news or suggestion for you. C

HI,

WIth certain desings of the MAcBook series (Pro and palin versions) the USB cable leaves the Motherboard and then works it's way through the Hiinge and up the back of the Screen to the Camera.

In certain models the cable can work loose from the Camera.

In some cases the items appears completely dead (no System Profile and no green Light)

In other cases Power seems to get there to power the light to say it's On but no app sees the camera and neither does System Profiler.

It has been known with screen replacements that this is part of that replacement but does not get connected up properly.

Realistically an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider will be the only places to get it fixed.

I seem to be experiancing the same problem. My Mackbook Pro is brand new (as in two days old) and it tells me the same thing. The hardware is conected in the "Face Time Cam-HD built in" under the report. All applications involving the camera say the same "no camera detected" message. This being a new computer, I have barely moved it across the house and hope it is not already broken. Could it be a factory defect?
