Retina units cannot upgrade RAM. You buy what you want and stay forever.
Non-Retina units can have replacement RAM at 25% of Apple's price through macsales.com or crucial.com. Both sell Apple-compatible RAM. macsales.com, your MBP documentation, or ifixit.com have instructions for swapping it. Currently 8 GB RAM goes for about $50 through macsales.com or crucial.com.
Thanks Steve im new to Apple and so want to check it all out before buying im looking at a Non-Retina unit the 13" or 15" just a case of costings really. Do you have any advise for me?
13 in is smaller, if you only do colege papers and carry it much. But it only has lightweight graphics integrated into the CPU that shares system memory. Also, only dual-core CPUs.
15 in allows ordering anti-glare and hi-res screen (1680x1050). Also has 2nd graphics card with more power and dedicated RAM. And has quad-core CPU.
But ... what do you plan to do with it?
Its really just for emails, browsing the web, and I have a business from home, but the software is online based so I can access it from anywhere... I stays at home too so dont carry it around. Does this help?
It describes your needs well.
"Business" ("internet-based business" can change unexpectedly) and "does not move much" speak volumes.
I would buy the 15 in, hi-res and anti-glare (I cannot apologize for recommending it as I love it!). You can find less expensive units at Apple's refurbished list (http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac) for saving similar to what you can get at the store. And those are Appl-certified with 1-year warranty and you can buy AppleCare.
My humble opinion.

That's the one thing I would change about my late 2011 MBP if I could. It's now just a $100 upgrade for the 2012 models, but I think that it was $250 when I ordered mine.
Sigh...
