Go to your nearest Apple Store, carrier store or Apple online store and buy the phone of your choice.
May you please elaborate?
...Gmail, Yahoo Messenger, AIM, Skype, iChat, iMessage, etc., allows you to send "Messages" that consist of text, from your computer, to other computers and cellphones that have the same software/service installed on them.
Mac OS X: iChat Basics

... However, I have a feeling that this is not what you mean by "TEXT MESSAGES."
Cellular providers have a certain format that can be used as an email address that allows you to email a text message to a cell phone. I can only offer two examples that work in the US.
For AT&T: xxxxxxxxxx@txt.att.net (Where xxxxxxxxxx is the person's cell phone number)
For Sprint: xxxxxxxxxx@messaging.sprintpcs.com (Where xxxxxxxxxx is the person's cell phone number)
You can add the resulting email address to the person's contact in your Address Book.
When they respond to your text, it will come back to you as an email.
I'm sure that Verizon and T-Mobile have something similar, Google for it.
Well, I'd like to send messages to cell phones using Apple's Mail application and not having to use AIM, Skype, iChat or iMessage nor having to log in to Gmail or any other web service.
I just gave you a way to do this.
Yeah, only responding to dsimagry to clearify my intent... to his post...
Got some info for you a bit later...
OK, it seems the method you outlined works.. From my Mail to their phone and replies go to my Mail App.
If THEY change the To: field info from my email address to my 10 digit cell phone number their Reply goes to my phone as a text message which I have to "Fetch", kind of like a downloaded message.
"xxxxxxxxx@mms.att.net" also seems to work for AT&T provider phones and maybe a similar format will work for other cell providers. ???
Oh and I have a prepaid cell, not a contract phone.
I'm not sure how to use the terms MS, SMS, or whatever the terms are, in these kind of posts {;->
Verizon is ##########@vtext.com
I am an Idiot.. took me a while to figure it out for myself and Lanny already posted my answer.
Thanks all
Plus, you're responding to a posting that has been inactive for over a year. Check the dates.

I get texts from my daughter's phone, and I can respond to those texts, but I can only reply to her, and I cannot create a message and get it to her for some reason. Why is that happening?
Lanny, I tried to find a way to PM you, but could not find it. Can you tell me how to change to a custom Avatar?
