I have to do a lot of reading for school, and most of it is in PDF. Also, I have screenplays to submit in PDF, and this is annoying and embarrassing.

For Safari, try removing the adobe pdf plugins.
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
These were installed when you installed Adobe Reader. Apparently there's a problem with these with the current flock of browsers.
PDFs do not show up in SAFARI!! Still! What gives?
