Q: Airport express and Canon LPB3010

Hi,

I've already read some discussions about this topic but they are quite old and I'd like to know if there have been any updates about the issue.

I'll explain briefly my problem: I'd like to buy the new Airport Express in order to connect it with my printer so that I could print wirelessly. Nevertheless I found out that Mac Canon drivers have some limitations and don't allow to print over network (or, at least, that's what I've understood),

I wonder if, as now there are new Canon drivers (CAPT ver. 3.50) and a new Airport Express has been just released, something has changed. It would be nice if someone found out a trick to make the printer work with the Airport!!

Thank you in advance

MacBook (13-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.7.3)

The CAPT and UFR2 drivers for Mac OS X require bidirectional communication with the printer. That is, as well as sending data to the printer, they expect data to be sent back.

Unless the new Airport Express is different to its predecessors, the USB port on the Airport does not support bidirectional communication and this stops the UFR2 and CAPT driver from working.

Thank you very much for your reply. Do you know how can I find out if the new Airport supports bidirectional communication?

Apple never showed this fact in their tech specs for the product. There is this Apple article about the Airport being for printing only and not supporting printer utilities, but this was last modified in 2008...

A quick look at the new Express specifications does not shed any light about the USB port supporting bidirectional communication. I guess you could ask the Apple store if you could buy one on the condition that you can return it if it does not work.

One last question: would an Airport Extreme do the job?? It supports external USB hard drives so its USB port should support bidirectional communication......am I wrong?

No, an Airport Extreme will not work. It has the same limitation on the USB port as the Express.
