Having a problem with the photos showing up after moving everything to another server.

Greetings,

I used an older version of iWeb to create several websites a few years back, and would like to retain them. I followed the instructions and downloaded the five folders for the five websites on my iDisk, which took more than two hours, and then uploaded them to the server I use to host another of my websites, and made them all subdomains.

The first issue I had was a php code error for every page. Turns out I had to remove the very first part of the index.html file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> and then everything seemed fine until I tried to go to another page. Ended up having to do this on every html page for each website.

Then I noticed that none of the pictures were showing up in the albums. I also have videos on two of the sites, and they worked fine. I checked /Photo_Albums/Pages, and inside were the folders with all the pictures, so I know they're there.

I have ruled out it having anything to do with my new server by opening the websites in Safari from their folders on my desktop, and had the same results; everything was good except there were no pictures on the page.

If anyone can help me with this I would really appreciate it! I've got 5 websites I have to get fixed in two days.

Thanks!

Take care,

~Chris

One of the main problems iWeb users are experiencing when switching to a "real" server is with badly constructed image file names.

"Real" servers are a lot less tolerant than MobileMe when you break the rules!

You need to remove spaces or substitute a hyphen and get rid of all these special characters like * etc.

You will have to delete all the "missing" images in iWeb, save and quit.

Rename the images, launch iWeb and drag them back in then republish the whole site - either using the iWeb FTP if you have it or to a local folder and upload with an FTP app.

Thanks Roddy, but I don't think that's it, either. When I downloaded everything from my iDisk, it automatically created 3 versions of every picture, and named them either micro.jpg, thumb.jpg, or web.jpg. They can be found in the Photo_files>Media folder, each set of three in their own uniquely numbered folder. For example, one the websites is of a friend of mines hot rod Fiero.

Here is his website via iWeb:

http://jimsfiero.com/

This is what it looks like after uploading everything to a different server:

Here's my personal website:

http://peckerwoodspitstop.com/

And here it is after uploading everything:

You can see that everything works, except where the page is a photo album.

Thoughts?

Oh, BTW, I tried Wyodor's suggestion, and it shut everything down with a 500 Internal Server Error. Removing the suggested file corrected everything.

If you pull up one of the photo pages in the browser and open the activity window you'll see that all the thumb files are not found.

This means that they are either not uploaded or not uploaded to the correct place. This can happen if you transfer files from one server to the other. Its always better to republish the whole site from iWeb to the new server.

Try publishing the site to a local folder from iWeb and launch this in the browser to see that the page is OK. If so, then the problem is on the server.

The version of iWeb I have 1.something, and can't do that, so I did what the Apple page said to do, which was go through iDisk.

"You can download the data directly from your MobileMe iDisk and then upload it to a third-party hosting service.

  1. From the Finder menu, choose File > New Finder Window.
  2. Under Devices on the left, click the iDisk icon and then choose Web > Sites.
  3. In the Sites folder, locate the "index.html" file and the folders named after your existing iWeb-published site.
  4. Move the "index.html" file and folders to your desktop and upload them to your FTP server."

I downloaded everything they said, and then uploaded it all to the server. After I started having isses, I tried your suggestion and opened one of them locally on my desktop with Safari, and it was exactly the same; pages looked great, but no pics on the album pages.

I took screenshots of the path I took, folder by folder, so you can see what I'm talking about...

you and your friend use iweb2.

you can't just download from idisk then upload to your host, here are why:

1) your albums/photos page point rss to rss.xml file on web.me.com

2) iweb generates rss.xml file differently for mme than that published to folder.

3) iweb header controls widget use this rss.xml file to create url the images.

for mme, image url has derivative:

http://peckerwoodspitstop.ricehatersclub.com/NASCAR_Albums/Pages/2_1_08_files/Me dia/446.jpg?derivative=thumb

for pubish to folder, image url is directly to the image:

http://peckerwoodspitstop.ricehatersclub.com/NASCAR_Albums/Pages/2_1_08_files/Me dia/446/thumb.jpg

you need to publish to a folder then upload the published folder and the index.html, do not upload just the content of the published folder doing so will break the site structure. make sure you enter your new url with your domain name in the publishing process.

Okay, I just finished publishing to a folder on my computer, and am now in the process of uploading all five folders and the index.html page to the public_html folder on my server. My uploading speeds aren't the best, so this will take a while, but I'll let you know how it turns out. Either way, I truly appreciate your time and effort in helping me!

Gentlemen, I offer you my most sincere gratitude! I went to bed early last night, and my FTP was still uploading everything to my server, so when I got up this morning I was looking forward to see the results. Success!!! I still have to redirect the domain names, but that's simple.

I truly appreciate both your help and your patience! Thanks!!!

Take care,

~Chris

I'm trying to find an answer where I no longer can publish the iWeb site to another server via a folder = I did download the site via FTP just in case but am having trouble finding the domain.site2 that holds the site == over time it might have gone somewhere as I updated Os but I can't find it [so far] - so is there any answer where one doesn't have the iWeb domain.sites2??

Jun 29, 2012 7:45 AM in response to Victoria Herring

Try a Spotlight search for Domain or Domain.sites2 if you gave file extensions turnrd on in Finder preferences.

If that fails, try using the freeware Find File as it will find stuff that Spotlight can't...

You can try uploading the published files and the site may work but you have no way of updating it anyway. Better to copy the info from the published files and use it to rebuild in iWeb.

I found an older version but not the one on the website = in any event, I did find that and published it to a folder on my computer just in case...I didn't see anywhere to import the downloaded FTP copy of the current site into iWeb so I could then work with it = is there no way [I did have iWeb Buddy which was supposed ot allow one to have more than one site in iWeb easily but haven't used it forever] -
