Safari hangs on so many webpages. Why?

Have you tried turning off Javascript?

I started noticing this problem recently, after I installed the security update (2006-002). It happened on both my G5 tower (dual 2Ghz) and my PowerBook G4. I thought that the v1.1 revision might fix the problem, but it didn't show up in Software Update. I went to Apple's website to download it manually and couldn't even get the the download page with Safari. I used Firefox instead and was able to download and install the v1.1 update. Unfortunately, it didn't fix the problem (it may be worse now).

In the time that it took me to open Firefox, find this discussion, and type this message, Safari is still haging trying to load Apple.com. This really *****!

Do you have internet apps SpeedDownload, iGetter, PithHelmet, Acid Search, Safari Enhancer ? Or Norton or Virex? Sometimes non-apple internet apps need updating or uninstalling. If you do, let us know which ones and which version, please.

Have you done these?

1. Empty your cache & History settings via the Safari menu

2. Trash your Icons Folder:
HD>Users>Home>YourName>Library>Safari -->Icons
Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated.
(This folder saves favicons of all the sites you visit. Needs cleaning periodically -- or you can change that file's preferences to "Read Only"
rather than "Read & Write." This will keep it from growing in size.)

3. Launch Font Book and check all fonts for duplicates. A duplicated font will have a bullet beside the font family and you can resolve duplicates by selecting the font and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
Do this for each font with a bullet next to it.

If you're still having problems:

4. Shut down your computer . . . unplug the computer, modem, and router, if you have one. Let everything sit for 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in, start up your modem & router, then restart your computer.

I tried everything that you suggested and Safari still hangs. I did notice that Safari on my G4 Powerbook (which I transport between work at home) works fine at home. I connect wirelessly through Airport Express at home and wired through an ethernet connection at work.

The other thing is that any other browser works fine in either location (work or home).

Safari on my G5 at work still hangs as does a co-worker's with the exact same configuration as me.

I'm baffled.

I just bought my wife a new Intel DualCore MacBook and she hates it, precisely for this reason. She used Safari on her previous Powerbook and it worked fine. Now it hangs on nearly 50% of the pages she goes to.

I started using Safari on my Powerbook today and its doing it too. (I normally use Firefox with no problems.)

This is a huge problem. Any fix will be appreciated

My safari also hangs more and more since one or two months. Before it worked perfectly well. I have the feeling that RSS has something to do with it. Here in Mali I have a very slow connection (in theory 128 Kb, but usually 4x slower) but working without breaks. I can use Internet explorer on the iBook, while safari hangs. On a pc I have no problems using firefox. Tried to delete history, empty cache, etc. but no success. Apple can you fix it?

Got the same problem, seems like the blue bar in about 50% of all sites gets stuck at 80% or sometimes earlier.
bought a brand new pb g4, all updates installed.

especially when opening a new window I usually have these probs.

Empty cache or cookies did not help, and btw I will not disable java or something, don't want to lose funcionality either.
cannot really be a network or wlan problem, as it all works definitely fine with firefox - and with opera too.

let me please know when Apple has solved this problem, I come from windows machines and thought (and hoped) everything would be perfect on macs;)

p.s.: sometimes i also have probs displaying a new window - it then shows very simple letters, no shape or form of the site. when clicking a link inside the newly opened window, the links disappear with nothing happening - might have to do with that?

I'm running Safari on three different Macs: iMac G5 PowerPc, G4 Powerbook, and G4 Digital Audio Tower. All 3 are updated to 10.4.5 with the latest Security and Java updates too. No problems. I've never had the latest version of Safari (2.0.3) hang. Your problems are puzzling. I'd recommend dowloading it again from the Apple OSX software pages and reinstalling, and reintall all the Java updates too.

Hi, I tried to follow this since I am having the same problem since the weekend... but no luck. the only page safari is launching is microsoft outlook web access. otherwise nothing else works. it doesnt open any web page, nor instant messenger, i-tunes, or any other application... please help!

Are you still 10.4.3 or is it that your "My Settings" is out of date?

I don't recall seeing this as the thread is too long for my half vast mind. If you are not 10.4.6, try the appropriate 10.4.6 Combo updater after all the appropriate precautions:

Back Up, Disk Utility, etc. For a thorough list do a search on "smoke."

The Combo can fix kinks and glitches that have crept in.

Same problem here. OS 10.4.5 Safari 2.0.3

Repeatedly happening now on many web pages... if I clcik the refresh button, often the page will display immediately. Bizarre!

The worst web site is Apple's own! (It took me 5 times before this post would even be accepted as the page kept hanging!)

Why, oh why, hasn't Apple fixed this?

It's getting worse... time for me to try out other browsers I guess...

same prob here. I just bought the intel dup core mac mini and starting to regret already!

I downloaded every browser i can think of and the same websites always won't load. can't check hotmail and some websites work some don't.

What is going on?

Tried everything including reinstalling etc etc.
