Macbook pro Retina display USB port right is 2.0?

I got a new macbook pro with retina display. It says on the website that there should be two USB 3.0 on both side. I have a external hard drive that is 3.0 USB i plug it to the right side and the colour indicates that it is a USB 3.0, plugging it to the right side, turned green and that indicate a 2.0 Instead. So what is going on?

I had some luck with these terminal commands. The drive mounted and showed the right speed in System Profiler. I recommend copying and pasting the commands into the terminal if you're not comfortable there.

sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions/PXHCD.kext /System/Library/Extensions/PXHCD.kext.not

sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions

Reboot the system after running these commands.

I had migrated from my previous machine and had this problem. I restored it, and it worked fine. I put everything back on and started isolating. This extension seems to be from when I had installed LaCie drivers on the old machine.

I actually had the same experience this morning as you described. I plugged my USB 3.0 WD My Passport external drive into the left port (right port empty) and it negotiated to USB 3.0 (USB 3.0 SuperSpeed bus). After I ejected the drive, unplugged it; then plugged it into the right port it negotiated to USB 2.0 (USB 3.0 High Speed bus). So, I unplugged the USB cable from the right port and rebooted. This didn't fix it.

The solution for me was to leave the USB cable plugged into right port and unplug the end to the device. Then plug it back in. After doing this, the drive in the right port negotiated to USB 3.0. I followed the information in this Apple article.

USB 3 devices are not activating or not appearing on the USB 3 bus. What could be wrong?

  • Sometimes unplugging and plugging the device back in can resolve the issue.
  • Try plugging the device into another USB port on the computer.
  • Try restarting your computer.

Whatheck,

Since June 16th I had been working with Apple for a solution for the UBS 3 not reconizing drives as USB 3.

This morning Apple called me again to try this Terminal Commands and binggo it solved the problem. All my current USB 3 drives (OWC, LaCie and Iomega) now run at the High Speed USB 3 (Speed: Up to 5 Gb/sec)

Now in my case the cause may have been the fact that I migrated using Time Machine (from a 2009 MBP) to the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Some how it wrote over the Termminal Commands. But anyhow after Appple Tech had me insert the command all is working great. I am a happy camper now.

The Tech did state to me that this may not fix the problem for all.

Is "this Terminal Commands" the ones that whatheck used?

And now that everything is running "Up to 5 Gb/sec," have you been able to boot from any of those drives at USB 3.0 speeds?

Hi FatMac

"Is "this Terminal Commands" the ones that whatheck used?"

Yes the same commands;

sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions/PXHCD.kext /

System/Library/Extensions/PXHCD.kext.not

sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions

"And now that everything is running "Up to 5 Gb/sec," have you been able to boot from any of those drives at USB 3.0 speeds?"

I only use the USB 3 drives for storing data (photos since I am a freelance photographer).
