We recently got macs at work which I am accustom to working on at home, however, my workflow has kind of changed at work in regards to the way I do things now. One thing that irritates me is that Safari seems to automatically download files instead of displaying them all in another tab or something. I don't want to have to have 20-100 downloaded files in my download folder!
Thanks, that only stops them from opening right away, which is kind of a step back from what I want.
I still want to be able to view the file, I just don't want it to be downloaded to a folder and I want to be able to view it in the browser.
What's odd is when I click a link that goes straight to PDF (something that ends in .pdf), it will open in the browser, but when I click something that is a pdf but isn't directly linked to a file, it downloads it, then opens. When we were on PCs and used any of those browsers, IE or Firefox, the same kind of link I would click would show it in a new tab. Now the same link sends it to the downloads folder (it does the animation where it shoots it to the upper right corner) and then it opens. The thing is, sometimes I have to click these types of links (they are an internal program we have that is browser based) 100 times a day, so, I really don't want to have my downloads folder cluttered with all sorts of files.
I may just have to switch to Firefox as it doesn't seem to do it there. Was just hoping to see if I could fix that in Safari as that's what I prefer to use.
This is controlled by ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
The easiest way to reset a few items might be to select Get Info for a particular file type and adjust Open With.
Right clicking a file may get you there quicker.
If by earlier box, you mean the "open safe files" no unfortunately. I also "got info" on one of the pdf files downloaded and changed it to open always in safari. It still downloads the file though before it opens in Safari. I went to look in my library and I don't have the com.apple.LaunchService.plist at all.
Which OS and Safari versions do you have?
Please paste the following into Terminal (in Utilities folder) and then hit return:
ls ~/Library/Preferences > ~/Desktop/preferences.txt
It will list Preference files in a text file called preferences.txt on your Desktop. Please open the file and see if it has a com.apple.LaunchServices.plist - If not please paste all com.apple items here.
That text file says I should have it. I still go to the link you gave me earlier and I don't see it. Searching "This Mac" for "launchServices" doesn't bring up anything except for the .txt file you had me create

Were you looking in ~/Library/Preferences or /Library/Preferences ?
The first is your preferences in your Home folder and the second is preferences at the root.
The tilda (~) implies /Users/your-name

Right, still no answer. Actually, I looked in my user folder first, except in my user folder, I have no Library or Preferences folder. The only Library folder I have is on "Macintosh HD." Again, I think a search would've found something if I had it? I am on Lion 10.7.4

Unfortunately, I can't provide a link as it's internal software we're running that requires a username and password to log in. This may actually be part of the problem, but seeing as how it worked just fine on PCs, I was hoping Safari would do the same. Maybe it's just not going to be possible, though.
What it does basically, is take a pdf (the one I can view and it opens in the browser window correctly) and places it on a "template" PDF (which is hidden to us) and opens it as another PDF, which is currently downloading, then opening.
Unfortunately I am unable to take this further unless a way can be found for others to test it.
I propose that you try your own IT department as it could be an issue related to your intranet.
I am not sure what Safari does with incorrect mime types - something for you to get your IT department to look at just in case this is the problem - I suspect PCs tend to rely more on extensions than mime types.
All browsers download all resources but in this case you want it to be invisible and probably in RAM as it would be for eg an image.
I only have Safari 5.0.6 but it has an "Open safe files after downloading" box on General Preferences - you could try this.
Thanks. That got me a step closer, kind of. Safari still feels the need to download the file first, however. Then, it opens right away in Safari in a new tab.
Does it alter if you play with the earlier box I mentioned?
You could try Reset on the Safari menu.
