I have photos on a usb flash stick. How do I move them to iPad?

Disclaimer - For me the Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture very different from that found in most 1st world nations, such as that in the two dominant North American countries. Written language has no tone. You need a camera connection kit http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC531ZM/A, the folder needs to be named DCIM and the filenames need to be 8 characters long.

If you have the camera connection kit then you might be able to - but a lot of flash drives need to much power to work with the kit, and there are also restrictions in the photo naming : you need to create a DCIM directory off the root of the stick/card with the photos underneath it, and the photo filenames need to be exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension i.e. in a similar format as if a camera had created/written them

Or try a third-party app such as Simple Transfer which can copy photos to from your computer and iPad via your wifi network (though they will only go into the Camera Roll album).

If the USB thumb drive doesn't work initially with the iPad CCK, try a self-powered USB hub between the USB stick and the CCK.

To add to what the others have said, I've had a 50/50 success rate with flash drives. sandisk and kingston dont' work I thikn because of the preinstalled software on the drives (no idea if they work if you format that off of them). Drives with big LED lights also trigger the too much power warning.

If you have a card reader handy the most reliable way is to use a SD card to get them from your computer to your iPad...or sync it (although please remember if you sync photos onto the iPad, you'll need iTunes to get them off the iPad but if you import them via the camera connection kit, you will have the ability to delete the photos)

if you go the flash drive route, just be patient and know that it may not work with that particular drive.

You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.

Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).

Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)
