When I try to edit with a plugin or photoshop, I get the message ..."Aperture does not support the image format." What is wrong?
Happens with all my plugins.
Thanks for the help.

Ernie,
Sorry. Meant to put that it was a CR2 file only and a jpg only on my most recent test.
Not sure how they get packaged together. I have not shot raw and jpg in awhile. I do not have any program that works between the memory card and aperture during import.
Again, I appreciate all your efforts.
Thanks,
Mike
Mike,
With a referenced file, do a File/Show in Finder and then see if you can open the master with another app, such as Photoshop and Preview?
Do the cr2 files have that extension?
Ernie
Ernie,
Yes and yes.
And it gives that message with a JPEG as well? I am wondering if only the message is bad, and the problem is whether that disk can be written to by Aperture to create the quasi master? Try choosing a Managed master, and then test whether the Relocate command will succeed?
Ernie
Yes, it works.
I if you try to then edit one the relocated master images, does it then fail or work?
Ernie
Both work.
Mike,
Let me be sure I am hearing you correctly: if you Relocate a Managed Master to an External Drive, then you can then Edit that image in either a plugin or Photoshop, unlike those you originally located at Import to the External?
Ernie
Yes. If I relocate file to a drive, and open in Photoshop, I can then edit that file in Photoshop or edit with the same plug ins that do not work in Aperture. This is true for different external drives and for both CR2 and jpg files.
Mike,
This is suggesting something is not working correctly at the time you are importing. Please tell me more about the setting and method you use when first importing an image to not be located in the Aperture Library.
Also, with Show in Finder, use Get Info to check everything about one of the masters not working, and one that is after relocation.
Ernie
Ernie,
I copy the files to the external drive. In Aperture, I use Import and store files in their orginal location. This is the same process I used when the plugins and Photoshop worked within Aperture.
When I check the info, what am I looking for?
Thanks,
Mike
I am not sure, but something in the copy to the external drive is different than when Aperture relocates them.
Look for any difference in the extension spelling for one thing.
How are you copying to the drive from the memory card, exactly? What is mysterious is that apparently Aperture can show them for its purposes, but when readying a quasi-master to be created for the external editor or plugin, it is different?
Ernie
number and extension are the same. permissions are the same.
Command C and Control/paste items. Same way as in the past.
Thanks,
Mike
Mike,
I would never copy and paste a photo file for this purpose. I would only drag and drop from the mounted memory card to the external drive, if not allowing Aperture to import and locate. There is so much information beyond what supports the image display. This may be the explanation for the mysterious package as well.
I cannot say what will have been missed, or not, but we know postivily that it is not working correctly for the later use in Aperture when readying to use a plugin or external editor. You need to change this work flow.
Ernie
If you have disk space to do so, you can first use the Consolidate command to bring these masters into Aperture, and then if desired Relocate them. But you should test to make sure nothing about this behavior is carried over -- but I think one test you already did would suggest it would be successful?
